MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Board was held in the Road Board office, Peel Forest, on Friday tho_l6th inat. There were present the lion. J. B. A. Acland (Chairman), Messrs G; J. Dennistoun, Thow, Tripp, and Mackay. . !- MINUTES. * The minutes of tha last meeting were read and confirmed. COicRESPONDEKCB. The following correspondence was read and considered From the Chief Surveyor, Christchurch, returning the plans of roads proposed to be dealt with under the Public Works Act, duly certified to for that purpose. From the Crown Lands Commissioner, Christchurch, forwarding a form of amended application for a grant cf land on the Opibi River near Fairlie Creek.— The Chairman informed the Board that he had signed the application and returned * it to the Laud Office. From tha ■ Geraldine County Council forwarding .a cheque for £133 19s 2d being a refund of 75 per cent upon \ subsidy of ratsa received from the General / Government. From the Treasury, We’liogtoo, informing the Board that the sum of £46 11s 2d had been forwarded to the credit of the Board, being the amount ot rates due on Grown Lands. From Mr J. H. Dean, calling attention ■ ■ to the state of the drain along the,side of the road near Peel Forest, and requesting that the samebetjleaned out.—The Overseer was instructed to have the work done.
Prom Mr .Bitch in reference to procuring a road line through part of the Timaru Borough Council Reserve tnlfiva access to hislaud.—Resolved—“ That t!ru —' Clerk write to the Timaru Borough Coun-" cil to say that the lessee of the Reserve is willing to meet the Mount Peel Board in getting a road Hoe to Mr Hitch’s land by way of exchange of the present surveyed road for a' more serviceable line, and to ask if the Council trill join with the lessee and the Board in carrying out the same.” STOCK BRIDGE. v Mr Mackay brought before the Board the desirability of erecting stock bridges over the South branch of the Opuha river on the 'Clayton road, and over the Opihr ■ at the head of ths Totara, Valley so as to open up a direct line fur driving-' sheep from, Sherwood Downs, Clayton and Mackenzie Country to Timaru. After e lengthy, discussion itrwas proposed by Mr Tripp, seconfjed„by Mr Mackay, and carried—“ That the petition of Mr Morris and others" at Sherwood Downs for a bridge;over the South Opuha river be sent to Mr W. Moody, of Timaru, referring him to section 9 of the ‘ Public Works Act Amendment 1884,’ Awh’ch enacts that the construction ot bridges shall belong t » County Councils and not to Road Bj iards.” Proposed by Mr Mackay and seconded by Mr Tripp —“ That the Mount Peel Road Board agree to pay one third of the oust of erecting a bii'lge over tin. ftpilii river at tlie bead of the Tot-mi Viibey mad, and one-half the cdrt of a stock brdire over the Sont-i bianch r.f the Opuha river on the C nylon ro<id and to lengthen the bridge" over the CUjton riaer so as t* be available for stock,” to which an amendment was proposed by the Chairman seconded by Mr Denniatouu and-carried —“That the resolution be referred to the new Board.” ‘ ; MISCELLANEOUS. The Overs er was instructed to attend to the fence between the reserve at Peel Forest-and Mr DenpiStoun’s land, to repair the footbridge over the creek near the Pound and to improve the ford over the creek near Tripp’s Pas?. Resolved—“ That the annual meeting of the ratepayers be held on Saturday, the Ist May next, and that the Returning - Officer take the necessary steps for the election of a new:Beard in accordance with the Road Boards Ac .” ACCOUNTS, After passing accounts to the amount of £43 19? the Board adjourned.
