MR GLADSTONE’S IRISH PROPOSALS.
London, April 12. Earl Alorlcy, Chief Commissioner of Works, lias resigned his office. Sir F. K. Shuttleworth, Undersecretary for Mines, has been appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, in place of Mr H-meage, resigned. The Daily News this morning states Mr Edward Stafford Howard, M.P. for Thornhury, wi t assume the vacant portfolio of Under-Secretary for India, «nd that Mr W. 0. Burlace, M.P. for Si. Ancell, will replace Mr Jesse Codings as Vice-President of the Board of Trade.
The French Press approve of Mr Gladstone’s proposals, hat both tlit' German and Austrian Press condemn them. The Daily News expresses the opinion (hat Ireland is not yet ripe for Home Rule, and it doubts whether Mr ■ Gladstone’s land purchase scheme will b& reduced by sixty millions, A great public meeting is to be held at Her Majesty’s 'lheatre on Wednesday next, to consider the Irish, question. The Marquis of Harlington will move, and the Marquis of Salisbury second, a resolution affirming the necessity of maintaining legislative union between England and Ireland. April 13. It is announced that Lord Kentnaro has resigned the position of Lord Chamberlain, and. the Earl of Cork has also resigned his office of Master of the Horse. The debate on the policy of the Government on the Irish question was r<suined last night. Lord Randolph Churchill spoke denouncing the Bill, while Messrs Burt and Bradlangh supported it in a measure. Mr Gladstone, in the course of his speech, stated Inhoped that the first reading of the Bill would take place that night, in which case the Budget should be brought down to-morrow night, the 14th inct,, the Land Purchase Act being introduced on Monday.
