B.M. Coubt, Tbmoka. —An account of the proceeding* at the B.M. Court, Temuka, yesterday, will be found on our fourth page. Temuka Bibles. —A meeting of the members of the corps takes place in the Volunteer Ball, Temuka, on Saturday next, at 7.30 p.m. for the purpose of forming a camp. Holiday. —ln response to a numerously signed requisition, Mr B. H. Pearpoint, Chairman of the Geraldine Town Board, has proclaimed Saturday, the 24th inst., a public holiday. Held Otkb, —Pressure on our space has compelled us to hold over our leading article, our report of yesterday’s meeting of the {j e '*aldine County Council, correspondence, and oi M * er matter. Bak Ewe Faib.— The annual Bam and Ewe h''* 1 ’ under the auspices of the Temuka and (Jeraldine agricultural and Pastoral Association, takes place on their grounds, Winchester) Barge entries have been received. Wood and Gbain.-'i’* o thousand eight hundred and forty-seven WOO l arrived at Timaru this season, 15,341 by rail and 5746 by road. Up to ,%turday last 139,874 sacks of grain have been mfpiTw m Timaru this season. Auction at Geraldine, Messrs J. Mundell and Co. bold a most important sale ■ f surplus stock at the homestead of B. Bayley, Esq., Moans, Geraldine, to-morTew. The sale is one of the moat important bold the district for some time.
Geraldine Town Board. —in our advertising columns will be found a notice showing the estimated receipts and exeendilure by the Geraldine Town Board for Ihe year ending 31st March, 1887. The proposed expenditure amounts to £535,
The Dredge Progbkss. —Work on the dredge Progress at Timaru was s'opped on Monday last by the breaking of a link that connected the buckets. All the buckets went to the bottom, but were soon recovered by the Harbor Board’s diver. The mishap will not take leng to rectify. Stack Burning. —Two stacks of wheat, containing ab.iut 700 bushels, belonging to Mr Frank Simmonds were destroyed by fi-o at Makikihi last Sunday morning. An insurance at the rate of 2s 61 per bushel covered about two thirds of the grain. Incendiarism is suspected. Temuka Football Club. —The opening game of the season will be played in the Park on Saturday. Play will commence at 3 o’clock sharp. Sides will be chosen by the Captain and Deputy-Captain. All players arc invited to attend. Also play will be held every afternoon in the Park at 4 o’clock. Californian Wheat fob Sydney.— Two cargoes of Californian wheat have left San Francisco for Sydney, and other vessels have been chartered to load wheat at the same port for Australia. The Christchurch Press understands that wheat can be shipped at Sun Francisco and lauded in Australia at less than 4s per bushel, after paying all charges. Temuka Dairy Factory. — The usual monthly meeting of the Directors of the above was held lust Tuesday. Present—Messrs Guild (Chairman), Gray, Barker, Austin and Cain. The Secretary reported that 13,770 gallons of milk had been received for which £199 10s had been paid. Accounts to the amount of £2l were pussed for payment and the meeting adjourned.
District Auditor. The Provincial District Auditor, Mr J. Ollivier, paid his annual visit to Geraldine on Monday and audited the books of the Mount Peel Road Board, and Geraldine Road, and Town Boards, ail of which were found to be correct. —The auditor will not v sit Temuka, Mr Dyson, Clerk of the Temuka Town and Boad Boards, having received instructions to meet him in Timaru to-morrow.
Geraldine Rieles.— The usual weekly parade of the Geraldine Rifles was held on Tuesday evening, (here being a very fair attendance of officers and men. Sergt.-Major Jones was present, and pul the men through a number of movements, the men drilling veiy Creditably. Several of the men had on their new uniforms, which were made by the N.Z. Clothing Factory, and they looked exceedingly well. When all the uniforms are supplied the appearance of the corps will be much improved.
Volunteer Bali..— We wish to remind our readers of the grand military ball lo be held on Friday evening in Geraldine, the Committee have spared no pairs to make the affair a thorough succrss. First-class musicians have been engaged to C'me from Ashburton, men are employed preparing the hall, and everything is being done for the comfort and enjoyment of those who may attend. Membeis of the Rifle Corps wid attend in full-dress uniforms, with belts. The dancing will commence about half-past eight. Tickets may be obtained from Mr J. W. Pye. Bazaar and Gift Auction.— A bazaar and gift auction in connection with the Presbyterian Church, Temuka, ikes place to-morrow, and, judging by present appearances, should result in a good round sum being netted. The bazaar will be held in the Volunteer Hall, and will be open from 11 a.m. Besides the stalls for the sale of the useful and fancy articles usually to be found at bazaars there will be a well-stocked refreshment stall, at which visitors will be able to supply their wants at very moderate cost. The articles remaining unsold during the day will be auctioned by Mr Gray during: (he evening. In the afternoon, at his yards at 2 o’clock, Mr K. P. Gray will hold a sale of live stock and produce of all descriptions. 1.0.G.T, —The weekly meeting of the Welcome Retreat Lodge, No. 44, Geraldine, was held on Monday evening, Bro. W. Willoughby, W.0.T., in the chair, The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Five candidates were proposed for membership, and one admitted on clearance. A sub-Committee consisting of Messrs G. H. Patrick, J. Brown, and T. Sberratt were appointed to urge the candidates io come forward for election. Bro, K. McKenzie was appointed to fill the place of Bro. J. Quinn on the Yistimg Committee. On the motion of Bro. 0. E. Sherrai t, it was decided to obtain a supply of ballot balls. Part of the by-laws were then considered, and the remainder will be considered at the next ( ordinary meeting. One account of £i Is 6di was passed for payment, and the lodge; closed.
Pbbsbtxbbian Church, Geeaidxne.—A congregational meeting of this church was held in the church on Tuesday evening, to consider the question of erecting a new church in a more central part of the town. There was a division of opinion among those present as to the advisability of undertaking the work just now, considering the depression existing among all classes ot the community. The new building is roughly estimated to erst between seven and eight hundred pounds, and several of those present expressed an opinion that such a largo sum could not be raised. After some discussion it was resolved to open subscription lists, and several canvassers were appointed lo canvass the town and report in three 'months’ lime, in order that an estimate might be formed of the probable amount of money that could be raised in this way. The subject of the parish gathering was brought up, and it was decided to hold it on or about May 24th. This gathering has always been a thorough succets, and it is to be hoped that the forthcoming one will be no exception to the rule.
The Eabtbb Encampment. —lt is expected that 450 South Canterbury Yolunteeis will take part in the Easter encampment at Oamaru. The Geraldine Rifles will join a special train (which will bring the Ashburton Tolunteers) at the Oran Static* at 6.50 a.m. on the 23rd, and the Temuka Rifles the same train at 7.15 a.m. At Timarn the limaru Naval Artillery, the C. Batteiy of Artillery, and the Timarn Rifles will join. The equipment should consist of two blankets, waterproof sheets, sox, shirt, flannel, towel, soap and brushes, neatly rolled hone-ollar fashion, and labelled with owner’s name. The corps will have to make their own arrangements to forward the baggage to station or otherwise. The men will have to carry great coats (rolled), water bottles, alas haversacks containing knife, fork and spoon, plate and pannikin, together with a light meal for the journey. The forage caps may be worn in the railway carriage en route. The Corps will only be required to provide iron buckets and lanterns in the proportion of one for eveiy eight men. The Senior Medical Officer will make bfs own arraagefor Ambulance and the attendance of at least one medical officer while the force is on the field. The Camp will break up on Monday evening, the 26th inst., the return joamey 8 p.m.
Harvest Thanksgivings. Harvest thanksgiving services will be conducted in the Wesleyan Church, Temuka, on Sunday next by the Rev. W. G. Thomas.
Temuka Town Board. —-A special meeting of the Temuka Town Biard for the purpose of confirming the by-laws adopted at a special meeting on March 15th, was held last night in the Town Board office. Present —Messrs Gray (Chairman), Quinn, Brown, Blyth and Mason. The minutes of the special meeting held on the 16th March were read and confirmed. After a short dis ussln, it was resolved—“ That a copy of the by-Jaws be forwarded to the Colonial Secretary.” The meeting then terminated. Sr. Saviour’s, Temuka. The annua! parish festival in connection with St. iSiiviour’s Church, Temuka, will be held on Thursday and Friday, April 29th and 30tb, and on Saturday, May Ist. We understand the Committee of Management have made every necessary arrangement to make the gathering a success. As will be seen by our advertising columns, addresses will be given by the Yen Archdeacon Harper, the Rev. Jag. Preston, Gsraldine, Rev. Jasper Smythe, Pleasant Point ; and the Incumbent. There will also be a Concert, Bazaar, and Gift Auction.
