Ninety-e’ght candidates for the Government scholarships have entered their names with the North Canterbury Board of Education.
At the Ofctgo Land Board on Wednesday one of the witnesses, who could not be discovered at the time of the dummyisra enquiry, put in an appearance to claim a surplus due to him after the land was re-leased. He stated that at the time of the enquiry he was in New. cnstle. The Board postponed consideration of the application to enable him to prove this and his identity* The Board resqlyed to give two mouths’ time to those deferred payment settlers who had capitalised, bat were now fulling in arrears with the interest.
The annual report of Kempthorne, Prosser, and Company (N.Z. Drug Com* pany) states that the net profit for the year am runts to £10,067. After providing for the dividend declared, and writing off for depreciation £3385, there remains, with the balance from last year, £12,154. The Directors recommend out of this a dividend of 9 per cent on the paid-up capital, carrying forward £9231. The following is Major Boddam’s report on the Auckland-made cartridges; firing with snider ball ammunition as compared with mark IX made at the Royal Laboratory, The figure made Ly the ILL. ammunition is very superior, and penetrates «t 50 yards, |-inch more. The powder in the Auckland ammunition is good, and appears equal to rifle firing powder in every point, except glazing. This would not effect the shooting metal, if the cases are good and the construction is good. The brass, however, should be tucked into the bottom groove of the bullet instead of the top, and by a proper machine. The bullet is six grains too light. There are no proper wads, and the bullets have been carelessly handled and are much deot«d. The ammunition is not all one guage, being of a 1! lengths. This would affect the shooting considerably. Cirtrdgesshould be lined if they are not required for immediata use.” At the University Senate on Wednesday it was resolved that no person be allowed to hold the B.A. and 8.5.0. degrees simultaneously until the Statutes bffectiog such degrees be alteied ; also, that it is expedient that an enquiry should he made whether a satisfactory scheme ■mi he devised for allowing students to graduate both in arts and science, giadnates in science to graduate in arts, graduates in arts to graduate in science ; that a Committee be appointed for such purposes, with liberty to sit during t ■<- recess, and that the last resolution be communicated to the Convocation for its consideration. On Friday, it was resolved to admit Mr A. L. Halkettt-Daw-son M, A., of Aberdeen, to the ad eundem degree. It was resolved “That a Special Committee, consisting of Professor J. M. Brown, Rev. W, Habens, Sir G. M. O’Rorke, Professor Sa'raond, Professor Shitnd and the mover be appointed to consider and report as . to, ■ whether a separate f.wu'ty for pedagogny should be instituted or certifitates granted for proficiency in subjects connected with the science and art of teaching also, “That, in coimei t'on with the L.L.B. degree, the examination in contracts and torts, real and persooal property evidence, criminal law, and equity he held within the colony,, and that English law bdefined in the calendar as the law in England up to 1842, and thereafter as the law in New Zealand, in so far us the same differs from the law as in England subsequent to 1842.” {

There have for a considerable time past been difficulties between the company and their commander Captain Bowron, and a fort-, night ago they requested him to resign. This he declined to do, and in consequence over twenty members gave up their arms on Tuesday, leaving only about six efficient members in the company.

The Mayor of Christchurch received a telegram from the Mayor of Hastings (Mr Russell) on Wednesday stating that there was plenty of work there for 100 men. He telegraahed to the Mayor of Napier to know whether this was correct and got the following reply :—“ Russell is agent for Scott, contractor for drainage at Hastings. Dodge to obtain cheap labor. Good tnen here out of work, if contractor could pay ordinary wages,,say—7e, Dp not send men on any account.” Petitions have been lodged against the whole of the'members of the Epuni District Licensing Commissioners in whose district the Hutt Racecourse ie situated. It appears to be understood (hat they will prohibit the sale of liquor the racecourse, as they are all Good Templars. The petition against Mr Fisher, of the Te Aro Committee, was dismissed. Mrs Florence Evangeline Muraby, of Hawera, died on Wednesday ; whilst under chloforform administered to ,allow of four, teeth being extracted. Two doctors were present. At the inquest - on the body of Mrs Mumby, on Thursday morning, the evidence showed that death took place in Dr Alexander’s surgery, where she bad gone to have her teeth extracted, and chloroform was ad- ... ministered by Dr Chilton. Deceased was examined before chloroform was administered, and was believed te besound, but she died suddenly. After the completion of the operation, a postmortem was made by Dr Lightbourn, who deposed that deceased suffered from fatty degeneration of the heart, and attributed death to this cause, accelerated by the chloroform used in the operation., The verdict of the jury was in accordance with Dr Lightboum’s evidence. ! It is understood that Captain Renaut, of the ship Pleione, has been appointed resident agent in London fop the Gear Meat Freezing Company, where he will r-ncieavor to push the highest trade in frozen and preserved meats.

At the Ashbiirlou Police Court, Tuesday last, Geo. and, Thos. Tilson were charged with disorderly conduct at the Hinds, and Guo. Watts was charged with busting and asaaulting Geo. Tilson, After liearing the evidence the charge against George Tilson was r dismissed on a teohnacality,. 'Phos,, Tilson was fined £5 and costs, and Geo. Watts ■us sentenced to 28 days imprisonment with hard labor and ordered to pay costs amounting to £4 Is 2d.
The Committee have declared two of the essays on the industries of the Colony • qnal. They were found to be written by Mr William Reeve Haßelden,6f-West* port, and Mr Winter, editor of Blenheim Express. The third is by Mr George Robert Hart, of the Press newspaper, Christchurch. The .
