TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held last night. Present—Messrs Gray (Chairman), Blyth, and Mason.

MINUTES,

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

BY-LAWS

The Chairman said before proceeding with the business he wished to draw attention to the fact that the by-laws were declared to have been improperly made, They had therefore to consider what steps should be taken to rectify any informality in them. Before bringing them into force they had consulted their solicitor, but whether they carried out his instructions or notit appeared they were now bad. The solicitor’s letter having been read, the Town Clerk said it was quite right. They made the mistake of adopting the by-laws before they were published. After the matter had been somewhat discussed,Mr Twomey begged to be allowed to make a remark. He wished to point out to the Board that almost anything they wished to do under the by-laws they could do under the Police Offences and other Acts. It was for them to consider whether they would go to the expense of making the by-laws afresh. If they did, in consideration of having upset them h : mself, he would advertise them at half price.

The Chairman Paid that another thing was that very probably the Municipal Corporations Act would pass next session, and they would have to make fresh bylaws.

The Clerk said they would not got tha fines inflicted in the Court unless they bad by-laws. These points were discussed at some length, and

Mr Blyth said he believed they could not get cn very well without bylaws. He would, therefore move—- “ That the by-laws be advertised in the Temuka Leader, with the view of bringing them into force, and that the Clerk call a special meeting, to be held on Monday, the 15th instant." The motion was seconded by Mr Mason and agreed K

CORRESPONDENCE,

Correspondence was read from the Fire Brigade, stating the fire-bell had fallen down on the previous evening as it was being rung; that in its fall it broke the window of the brigade station, and that the bell itself got cracked. It waa suggested that a new one should be bought, and that two new wells be sunk : one in front of the Bank of New Zealand, and another in front of the Churches in the main road. It was resolved—“ That the Clerk write to Messrs A, and T, Burt (Dunedin), J. Anderson (Christchurch), J. Hatton (Timarn), and A. Brisco and Co. (Dunedin), asking the cost of a fire-bell 18in, and upwards in diameter.” With regard to the wells asked for, it was decided not to do anything in them until the Board had got a report on the condition of the wells already la existence.

Mr Blyth said he would like to see water brought into town. If it cost £SOO ho thought it would be easier to pay the interest on it than pay for keeping the present wells in repair. The Clerk was instructed to get the report made upon the subject from the Road Board, with the view of discussing the matter.

overseer's report.

The Overseer reported as follows “ Since last meeting 1 man has been employed 19$ days clearing out channels, breaking and picking atones, and cutting thistles and gorse, etc. I should recommend all channels to be cleaned and the mouths of drains properly cleared before the wet weather sets in. In several places a few large stones want breaking. This applies particularly to back streets, as the main street is now in good order. I should respectfully suggest that a door mat and scraper be procured for the office door, as after wet weather the shingle brought in is hard on the linoleum. The balance in bauk last Board day was £lO5 16s, and accounts passed then amounted to £l4 3s. The money collected to the end of February is £ll Id, leaving a balance to credit of £lO3 Os Id. It was decided to have the channels cleared and to procure a scraper and mat for the door.

ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £l7 14s 6d were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
