Cardinal Moran, accompanied by Bishops Murray, Reynolds, Moran, Redwood and Dr O’Horan, Private Secretary, arrived by train at Auckland on Thursday evening. They were received by a considerable crowd. A procession, headed by a band and the Hibernians, marched to the church where addresses were presented, and the Cardinal replied in a speech suitable to the occasion.
A boy named M. Hugh, IT years of age, was committed for trial at Napier on Thursday, on a charge of horsestealing. Mr Jellicoe, solicitor, has been retained by Messrs Williamson and Son, sharebrokers of the Wellington Woollen Company, to commence an action against Mr J. H. Lance, M.H.R, for Cheviot, for alleged slanderous statements he uttered at the Westport banquet to His Excellency the Governor.
At the Te Aro reclamation works, Wei" lington, on Thursday afternoon, a man named Patrick Gulfoyle was crushed by a fall of earth, and expired from injuries received. . .
At a well attended meeting of volunteers held at Christchurch, on Friday night, Colonel Lean presiding, it. was decided to form a Nuith Canterbury Volunteer Rifle Associa'ion, and to hold a prize firing meeting on Boxing Bay each year, and on such other days as may l>e determined by the Managing Committee. A man calling himself Thomas Kelly, but whose real name is William Mee, sought to recover at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Dunedin, on Friday, £62 10s from John McGee on the ground of oppression, undue influence, and fraud. Kelly was a cattle dealer in Carlisle, England, and bought cattle from auctioneers on credit, and left for the colony without paying for them. McGee had known Mee or Kelly in Carlisle, and it was contended that he obtained £62 10s by threatening to send him Home. For the defence it was shown that Kelly had sought out McGee and had voluntarily given him money to hold his tongue. The Magistrate believed the latter version and gave judgment for the defendant. The inquest on the Nile street bridge (Nelson) disaster was concluded on Friday evening. A number of experts were called including Mr Climie, 0.E., and Mr Lightfoot, the city surveyor and designer of the brick bridge, gave evidence. After a retirement of an hour anda-half the jury returned a verdict “That the death of William Hollyman was caused by injuries received by the fall of a po-tion of the new bridge in course .if construction, which in our opinion is aitributable to faulty design and construction by the city surveyor and his foreman, combimd with bad workmanship, to which; we add the following rider We consider the Council are to blame in allowing a work of this unusual character to he without first submitthe plans and specifications to a competent engineer, and for - not appointing a skilled inspect- >r over the work. We are also of opinion that the conduct of the witnesses J. Harris and Lawrence Akersten is highly reprehensible for not warning the workmen under the arch of the danger they were in."
Cadet Duggan and three other members of the Salvation Army were on Thursday, each fined 40s and costs for obstructing the Blenheim Market Place. The Volunteers, under the command of Major Baillie, were paradiug,andthe Salvationists deliberately obstructed and annoyed them and caused a great crowd to collect. The disturbance was so great that the Major could not give the word o! command, and the men were kept ing at ease for a considerable time tor tear of a collision with the Salvationists whose conduct greatly annoyed them. The Cadet Company attempted to march off the ground, hut the crowd broke their ranks. The defendants pleaded that they went there simply to assert their right of meeting, not to obstruct and annoy. The Bench pointed out that as every protection and consideration had hitherto been extended to the Salvationists, they could not expect much consideration if they deliberately broke the law. The police withdrew three other charges against the defendants, arising out of the same affair.
Hop picking is now in full swing throughout the Nelson district. The acreage is very much less than was the case last year, and the yield per acre will be less on the whole, but the crop appears to be of splendid quality; Mr F, J. Garrick, M.H.R. for St Albans, addressed his constituents on Thursday night, and received a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence. He expressed himself a firm supporter of the West Coast Railway, and said he was opposed to a dissolution, at least till after the Government have declared their policy. At a meeting of the Southland Freezing Company on Saturday, a resolution was carried that a full statement of the position of the Company be printed ami—circulated among the shareholders, and mother meeting be held in four weeks from date to give time to obtain a sufficimt number of shares to relieve the Company from its present embarrassments.
