ORARI BRIDGE WATER SUPPLY.
A number of owners of property assembled in the Orari Bridge schoolroom on Saturday evening, Feb 27th, for the purpose of considering the advisability of having the district proclaimed a Water race District, The attendance was very small, only eight persons being present. On the motion of Mr Fiefield, Mr 0. G, Tripp took the chair. The Chairman, in introducing the subject of a water-race for the district, referred to the long drought of the summer, and the inconvenience many land-owners experienced through the want of water, and said bethought it was advisable to have the water brought into the district. If it were found impracticable to get the water from the Orari, he would hare no objection to have In's creeks near the slip-panels t ipped for that purpose.
Mr Fiefield said that the want of water was severely felt in his part of the district. He had spoken to a number of landowners, and they all expressed themselves in favor of the scheme, if it could ha carried out at a reasonable cost. The boundaries of the Water-nice District were then discussed, but as Mr Sherratt (who had promised to be in attendance with a map of the district) was unavoidably absent at a meeting in Geraldine, the matter dropped. On a question from the Chairman, Mr Hewsou said that he was not very eager about tho race going through his land, as he bad been working all the summer at a water supply for himself, but at the same time sooner than throw any obstacle in the way he would not object to this race going through his land. He, however, thought that the supply from Mr Tripp’s creek would not' be sufficient to supply the race, and advocated the supply from the Orari River, Mr R. H. Postleth waite read from the Act the steps to be adopted in petititioning for the formation of a water-race district. It was decided that Mr Fiefield should obtain a tracing of the map ef the Road Board District, and get those who require water on their properties to mark on it the sections through which water would be required, and to sign the petition re the same ; and that, if in his opinion sufficient inducement, is offered, he obtain the opinion of an engineer as to the probable coat, etc., and report to a meeting to be held in the Orari Bridge Schoolroom at a future date.
This concluded the business, and the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
