TIMARU MARKETS,

The Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Limited, report for the week ending February 20th as follows : Harvest operations are now in full swing, and in a few instances thrashing has commenced. We have seen some splendid samples of new wheat and oats, the grain being bright and well matured. Notwithstanding the exceptionally dry season, we bear of several heavy crops, and it is expected that the yield per acre will be we'l up to the average of past years, but owing to ihe decreased area oi

laud uiid.-r cultivation, it is almost certain that 1m total quantity available will show material deficiency on that of last season’s returns.

During the past month the produce market generally has been quiet, buyers showing little disposition to speculate, pending the opening of the market for the new grain. Wheat—ln the early part of the month prices showed a tendency to harden, and we placed 2000 sacks inferior to prime milling red chaff at 3a Id to 3s 2£d per bushel, ex store. The following are our quotations :—Red chaff, 3s Id to 3s 2d ; Tuscan, 3s 2d to 3s 3d ; and velvet 3s 3d to 3s 5d ex store, Timaru, As the new wheat comes on the market, these prices may suffer a decline, but it is anticipated that any depreciation in values can only be of a temporary nature.

Oats—Buyers having purchased largely in anticipation of a rise in prices owing to a supposed scarcity of this cereal, transactions during the month have not been numerous. Very small stocks of old oats are now on hand, and these are held by owners in hopes of higher prices later on. Onr sales for the month have been 700 sacks at up to 2s 4d f.o.b. for Canadians, and we have placed a line of 370 sacks new Canadians at equal to 2s 3d f.0.b., Timaru. We quote as present values Long feed, Is 10d to Is lid ; short feed, 2s to 2s Id ; and bright heavy milling, 2s 2d to 2s 3d f.o.b. Timaru.

Barley—The new grain is reported in splendid condition. There is none, however. yet in the market, and maltsters are not anxious to purchase in the meantime. We have placed about 100 sacks old malting at 2s 4d, ex store.

Butter—Fresh, 9d tolOd ; salt, kegged, 8d to 9d, kegs extra.

AUSTRALIAN MARKETS,

Sydney, Feb. 19,
