STRANDING OF THE S.S. WAIHORA.

Melbourne, Feb. 18. News is to hand from the cable elation at Low Heads, Tasmania, that the Union Company’s s.*. Waihora, while on tin vovage from Hobait to Melbourne, struck on Ed lysione rock, a point a' the north-east of Tasmania, at 2 p.m yesterday. The vessel proceeded soiin distance after striking, but the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company s.s. Southern C. oss coming alongside, and the water gaining fast in the forehold of tho Waihora, it was decided ti beach her on Swan Island, Bank Strait, which was accordingly done. Her crew and passengers were safely landed on Swan Island, and afterwards transferred by the Southern Cross to Low Heads, where they will be picked up and brought to Melbourne by the s.s, Flinders tomorrow. Later. The Waihora left Hobart on Tuesday evening for Melbourne, having on board over 200 passengers. The weather was fine. When abreast of Eddystone the vessel struck on a rock, which she passed over, and was immediately put back into Sandy Bay, but afterwards steamed on to Swan Bay, where she was making water fast, and had eight feel of her plating knocked off the bow. She was beached, and now lies with seven feet of water in the hold. The Southern Cross came alongside at 4 p.m., and rendered all assistance required. Captain McGee and the crew of the Waihora regain with the ship. It is stated tinrock is one not marked on the charts.

Latest advices regarding the Waihora state the vessel has settled down on tin sand about a hundred yards distant from the shore. Strenuous exertions are being made by the officers and crew to save the horses. The weather

continues favorable, and hopes are entertained that the live stock will be safely got ashore. The steamer Etherole and the tug Troucan have been despatched with pumps to Swan Island. It has been arranged the Southern Cross shall bring on the Waihora’s passengers to Melbourne.

Dunedin, Feb. 18, The Waihora is insured for £49,000, of which £17,000 is in London, £12,000 in the colony, and the Company’sown risk of £20,000.
