CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE.
The Corn Exchange reports for the week ending Friday evening, the 19th February : The weather has been all that could be desired for harvest work and operations are now well advanced. Threshing machines are at their busiest, and we may shortly expect large quantities to come forward. Many farmers are taking advantage of the favorable storage rates and intend holding for better prices, Generally, the grain is in excellent condition for shipping, although a good many samples are thin and pinched. Prime wheat are being taken up at from 3s 2d to 3s 3d local millers being most eager to operate ; slightly shrivelled, 2s 10d to 3s; chicken wheat (whole) is still saleable in limited quantities at 2s 9d ; broken wheat, 2s 5d to 2s 7d, Oats, milling, 2s 2d; short feed, 2s to 2s Id ; Danish and Tartars Is lOd to 2a, with a good shipping enquiry. Barley, malting, has a good demand at Ss 3d to 3s fid, but many parcels are thin, and others have been spoilt by being threshed too close. Blue peas are wanting, and good samples are worth 3s fid to 3s 9d. No beans are yet in the market. Rye-grass hasastrong demand for immediate orders, up to 4s 3d can bo obtained tor farmers’ parcels, well dressed ; machine-dressed 4s 9d to ss, with little offering ; cocksfoot is slow in coming to hand: growers ask 4£d but buyers do not seem inclined to go to that figure, unless to complete orders. Dairy produce has buyers for prime butter, in tubs, at Bd ; cheese, loaf shape, fid : medium size, 5d ; large, 4d to 4|d. The above prices are those paid to farmers, and delivered f.o b. Lyttelton.
CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS,
At the Addington yards on Wednesday fairly large entries of stock were yarded for the day’s supply ; attendance of buyers hardly an average one. The sale of fat cattle began agafo to, a_yory limited number of the trade, which raafls-JPatters very dull for a t'rae, and they did not throughout the sale, the demand being very dull. Steers sold at from £5 10s to £7 15s; heifers, £4 12s 6d to £6 5a ; fat cows, £4 5s to £6 17s 6d, being from 17s to 18s 6d per 1001 b. A moderate entry of fat sheep yarded, some lines of good crossbreds being on offer. No improvement can be recorded ; in fact, business was, if anything, a shade worse, A line of superior wethers sold at 10s 6d and 10s 9d per head ; other lines, from 7a 6d to 8s 6d ; crossbred ewes, from 4s 6d to 8s; merino wethers, from 3s 3d to 7s, being from IJd to per lb. A large number of fat lambs were on offer, prices ruling very low, viz., from 3s 6d to 6s 9d per bead. In the store sheep market very little was yarded. A line of young crossbred ewes sold at 6s per head ; lines of inferior lambs, Is to 2s per bond. In the pig market a large entry was yarded ; the demand proved a great contrast to last week’s sale, and prices declined considerably. Stores sold at from 12s 6d to 18s per head. Porkers, 18s and 20s. A few lines of good store cattle were yarded. Business eot very brisk. No alteration to quota in values.
RAN SHOE A MARKETS.
There were a number of very fine parcels of grain, both of wheat and oats, submitted for sale on Tuesday, and several purchases were concluded at these prices; For wheat delivered at country stations, 2s 9d to 3s ; oats, Is lOd to 2s. The millers considered the grain offered to be in the best condition they have seen it for many years past.
DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS.
At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday the following business was transacted :
Fat Cattle—l7o head were yarded, the the greater portion consisting of mediumweight useful-quality beef, only a few pens being heavy weights. Bidding was spirited throughout, and all were disposed of at prices slightly in advance of last week’s. Best bullocks brought from £8 to £9 15s; medium, £4 5s to £7 15s ; cows, £4 10s to £8 5s. —L, Maclean sold for Mr W. Studbolme (Waimate Estate), 7 heifers from £7 2s 6d to £8 ss. Wright, Stephenson and Co. so'd for Mr Andrew Grant (Temuka), 14 bullocks from £6 Ise to £7 7s 6-1,
Fat Sheep.—l 739 penned for the week’s supply, 150 of which were merinos. The quality ranged from inferior to prime, and Included a few pens nice quality wethers suitable for freezing. For the latter class bidding was spirited, and sales effected were at an advance on late rates ; but medium and inferior quality were dull of sale, and for some lots last week’s prices were barely reached. Best crossbred wethers brought from 8s to 10s; do owes, 7s to 9s 6d ; medium, 48 9d to ps 6d.—L. Maclean sold for Mr Andrew Martin (Otaio), 128 prime halibrod wethers from 8s 9d to 10a (top price) ; for the N. 55. and A. L, Co, (Pareora Estate), 68 crossbred ewes at 7s 6d; for Mr M. Studbolme (Waimate Estate), 135 crossbred ewes from 7s 6d to 8s 9d.—Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold for Mr Thos. Mitchell (Washdyke), 60 crossbreds at 8s 9d ; for the N.Z. and A. L. Co. (Levels Estate), 132 crossbred ewes froms 8s 3d to §s 9d. Fat Lambs.—7QT penned. This number being in excess of requirements, competition was dull and prices rather under last week’s, the range being from 3s 6d to 7s 9d.
Fat Pigs.—lß7 penned. A large portion of these weire suckers and stores, for which competition was exceedingly dull. Good porkers were in better demand, and fetched higher prices. Suckers and stores brought from Is 6d to 17s 0d 5 porkers, 20s to 30s ; baconers, up to 445.
The next sale of fat stock will be held at Burnside Yards on Tuesday, 23rd inst., commencing at 10 o’clock, on account of Wednesday being race day.
RUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS.
The following is the report for the week ending W e do e sdav Wheat.—Transactions during the past week have been small. Buyers prefer to see prices established for new crop before purchasing to any extent. Several lines of prime old wheat have been offering, but as buyers would not touch vendors’ limits, they are si'll unsold. A fevy odd lifted have found 1 buyers af, for
best, np to 3s 9d, which may be given as top pri ’<? ; other milling sorts fetch 3s 6d to 3s 8d ; inferior down to chick wheat is offering more plentifully, and prices are more in favor of buyers—say, 2s 6d to 3s 3d, according to condition. Outs, —The week’s arrivals here have been rather over the average, all old crop, and generally in fine order ; but as nearly the whole are subject to reserves, which are above buyers’ limits, they have nearly all bean taken into store. Shippers are clearing away stooks they have had on hand for some time, but at present values they may bo considered quite out of the market. Local dealers buy only sufficient to meet their trade wants. Quotations are—For short feed and milling, 2s 3d to 2s 4d ; medium, 2s 2d to 2s 3d ; inferior, Is lid to 2s; a line of beautiful long Tartarian seed oats brought 2s 81. 73„ r ley.— Some transactions have taken place in malting at 3s 3d to 3s fid. Feed and milling, 2s3d to 2s 6d. Chaff.—-The market is very bare of good quality, and £3 12s fid could now be got ; ordinary, £3 ss, Potatoes.—Derwents are now taking the place of kidneys, and sales have been at £4 ; kidneys arriving fresh, £3 os. Butter.—hresit, 9d to lOd ; salt, quiet at S^d. Cheese.—s£d for best quality. Eggs.—Is fid per dozen.
Hides.—The demand continues firm for heavy-weights, clean, and free from cuts ; but light are somewhat neglected, and are only saleable at lower prices. Tallew.—There is no change to note in values, all consignments coming to hand being cleared at late rates.
ENGLISH MARKETS
London, Feb. 17. A cargo of Californian wheat has been sold at Liverpool for 31s fid.
