GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.

A special meeting of the Board was held on Wednesday evening. Present— Messrs R. H. Pearpoint (Chairman), N. Dunlop, J. HufFey, and W. S. Maslin. formation of fire brigade.

The Chairman read a mass of correspondence which had been received from various sources, giving information respecting the formation of a fire brigade.

A discussion then took place as to whether the Board should devote a portion of their funds towards the purchase of a plant. The Chairman suggested that the Board should give for this purpose a portion of the rate about to be levied.

Mr Maslin said it did not matter whether a grant wern given out of the rate or from the Board's funds. It was one and the same thing. The Chairman said if a portion of the rate were given it might do away with the impression that existed among the public, that the Board had been forced to rate for want of funds.

It was resolved, after some further discussion, on the motion of Mr Dunlop, seconded by Mr Maslin—“That the Board are willing to assist in the purchase of an engine, and provide shed for holding the same, conditionally on a requisition being signed by the ratepayers, and presented to the Board for consideration.”

WATER SUPPLY. In reference to a water auppy for fire purposes, it was found that an engine of the size most suitable for the township would not lift the water f beyond a certain depth, and in a dry season such as ithe present would be unable po lift from the depth at winch the water now lies below the surface, therefore the idea ot

sinking wells for a, water supply for fire purposes was out of the question.

Mr Maslin considered such a scheme as had been proposed to bring a supply in by means of a race was beyond the power of the Board. The other members present agreed to this, and after a conversational discussion it was resolved that the Clerk ascertain the cost of putting down concrete tanks which would hold about 10,000 gallons each. THE LAMP LIGHTING, Mr Maslin drew the attention of the Board to the unsatisfactory state in which the lamps were generally in, and the bad light given by them.

It was resolved that the contractor for lighting the lamps should be given notice that his contract would be cancelled unless the lamps were better lighted. This being all the business the Board adjourned.
