GERALDINE TOWN BOARD LAMPS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — A correspondent in your last issue referred to the way in which the lamps are ploced on the main street through Geraldine, and the effect their light has upon the eyesight when anyone is passing along the street on a dark night. They now stand alternately on each side of the street, about ten nr twelve chains apart, and it is true that in this position they are not as useful as they might be. They do dazzle one’s eyes, and only serve “ to make the darkness more visible ” after one is passed. This evil could without doubt be obviated in a great measure at a cost of a few shillings, and the way to do so would be to place the lamps on one side of the street only. If this experiment were tried I am certain it would be found to answer, for it is the slanting rays of light coming from the lamp on the opposite side of the street to the one last passed which confuses the eyesight. If anyone wishes to prove this argument let him take notice when walking up the street from Pearpoinl’s corner to Mandril's stables and he will find that he will have no difficulty in seeing his way dearly, as the lights are all on one side of the street, until he comes to the hotel light on the opposite side and it is then he will find the disadvantage of having lights on both sHer, I am, &c., NoCTURNALrS, Geraldine, Feb, 17tb.
