LOWER HEATHCOTE TROTTING MATCHES.

In connection with the Lower Heathcote Racing Club, the first meeting devoted exclusively to trotting ever held in Canterbury, took place on Thursday. The weather was fine, and about 600 people were present. £ISOO were put through the totalisator during the day, Sport was marred by protests, and some accidents occurred. In the pony harness trot two of the ponies got rid of their drivers, and ran a muck round the course amongst all the other horses. One of the ponies capsized his sulky three times, and then jumped on another sulky and smashed it. The Maiden Trot, of £'AO, three miles, was won easily by Mr Patton's Conger. The Pony Saddle Trot, of £2O, two miles, was won by Mr Kirkwood s Our Pony, hailiog from Wanganui. The Open Saddle Trot, of £45, 3 miles, produced a good race, and was another victory for Conger, who was again protested agaainst for breaking, The stewards were unable to come to a decision. Eighteen started in thia race ; the Dunediu horses Oliver and Randall were nowhere, The Pony Harness Trot, 2 miles, was won by Mr Bloxwick's Dot, Our Pony being second. The latter would probably have won had he not been interfered with by the ponies who got away from their drivers. The Open Harness Trot, of £4O, fell to Erin, and the Consolation to Energy.
