AN ALARMING RAILWAY EPISODE.
A scene of unusual excitement occured lately on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, near Hightown. The train from Liverpool to Southport was running between Hall-road and Hightown, when the whole of the passengers were suddenly alarmed by a series of cries for help proceeding from one of the compartments of the train. Many of the passengers joined in the alarm in order to attract the notice of the guard, and the train was soon brought to a standstill. It was then found that a young man in one of the third-class compartments bad caused the commotion, and thathe had been alarmed by a long knife being thrust through the partition in the back of the compartment which he occupied. He was accompanied by a young lady, who had fainted from the fright, both of them believing that a madman was in the next compartment. The latter, it turned out, was occupied by a man who bears a respectable character, and is a contractor, and it appeared that he had pushed the blade of Ms knife through the partition “for a freak.” The knife I passed within an inch of the young lady
at the other side of the partition, who, therefore, had a narrow escape from dea th.
