GERALDINE LITERARY INSTITUTE.
COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the Committee of the Geraldine Literary Institute was held on Wednesday evening lust. Present—The Rev. Geo’ Barclay, patron (in the chair), Rev. Jiia. Preston, and Messrs T. Hughes, J. S. Waite, and the Secretary, Mr E. Eurdcastle. MINUTES, The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. THE INSTITUTE ROOMS. The Secretary stated that the walls and ceiling of the Reading and Committee Rooms had been thoroughly cleaned and whitewashed, the services of a man having been obtained for two days for the work. The application for Government subsidy had been forwarded on the basis of last year’s balance-sheet, and the old illustrated papers had been disposed of. ANNUAL RETORT. The (op or t of the Committee* to be submitted to tu., annual meeting, was then read by the Secretary, and approved of. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting then took place. Present—The Rev. G"0. Brisco, N, Dunlop, C. E. Sherratt, and the Secretary, Mr E. Hardcastle. MINUTES. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. committee’s report. The report of the outgoing Committee was thou read as follows ; “Geraldine, Feb, Ist, 1886. “ Gentlemen, —Your Committee have the pieasu'e to lay before you their report and balance-sheet for the past year : “ The receipts forthe year, including the Government subsidy of £l2 5s 6d, amount to £4:l 19s 6d, to which is to be added the balance from last year, £lO 6s 7d, making a total of £52 5s 6d, The expenditure has been £44 13s Id, thus leaving a credit balance of £7 13s. The Looks have been duly audited by Air C. E. Sherratt, and the balance-sheet is now before you. “The subscriptions due during the year amount to about £lB, and taking the Government subsidy at £l2 (the amount granted last year) the total income will amount to for the year will amount to about £37 and us the expenditure will not be less than last year, it is obvious some scheme must be devised to augment the income, “ la June last Mrs Addis resigned the office of librarian and caretaker, and Mrs Bosswell was appointed her successor. The efficient manner in which Mrs Bosswell has performed her duties since her appointment has given your Committee every satisfaction. “A proposition to convert the Committee Room into a Library and to give the room at present used as a Library to the caretaker, was discussed at a meeting held in December, but was held over till a fuller meeting. “ It will be the duty of this meeting, in accordance with the rules of tho Institute, to elect auditors and officers for the ensuing year in the room of those who retire.” On the motion of Mr Sherratt, seconded by Air Brisco, the report and balancesheet as submitted was adopted. INCOME FOR THE TEAR. A discussion took place relative to the income for the ensuing year, and it was finally resolved on the motion of Mr Hughes, seconded by Mr Waite—“ That ihe question of funds bo left to the Committee to deal with when occasion requires.” PROPOSED ALTERATION. Be the question of converting the Committee room into a Library, it was the opinion of the meeting that if the cost of removing the shelving from the present Library would not be too great, it should be done, in order to give the caretaker more accommodation. . Air Mundell moved, Mr Dunlop seconded, and it was carried—“ That it be a recommendation to the incoming Committee to have the alteration made, I if the cost is not too great.” ELECTION OP OFFICERS. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Patron, Rev. Qeo. Barclay ; President, Rev. Jas, Prei-ton ; Vice-President, Dr Fish ; Treasurer, MrT. Hughes ; Secretary, Mr J. S. Waite ; Committee, Messrs J. Cunningham, J. Huffey, J. Pizzey, G. W. Westropp, W, Willoughby, E. Hardcaatle, J. Mundell, A. H. Brisco, N. Dunlop, and 0. E. Sherratt. On the motion of Mr Mundell seconded by the Rev. Jas. Preston, Mr J. Greaves was appointed as the Institute’s representative nt Woodbury. Messrs J. Mundell and C. E. Sherratt were appointed auditors, on the motion of Messrs Brisco and Dunlop. MISCELLANEOUS Mr Sherratt proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring officers, which was seconded by Air Brisco and carried. A special vote of thanks was passed to Air Hanloastle for his services as Secretary during the past year, on the motion of the Rev. Jas. Preston, seconded by Mr Dunlop. It was left to the new Committee to decide upon a bonus to the Librarian. This being all &he business a vote of thanks to the Rev. Chairman brought the annual meeting to a close. NEW COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the newly-elected Committee was then held, the Rev. Geo. Barclay again being in the chair. Aless R Sherratt, Hardcastle, Dunlop, and thi aiver, were, on the motion of Air Mundell, appointed a sub-Oommitiee to inquire into costs, etc,, of altering the rooms, and to report re the same within a week, A bonus of one guinea was voted to the Librarian, on the motion of Air Mundell seconded by Mr Dunlop. The meeting then terminated.
