A prisoner named James Cameron, alias Barlow hanged himself in the lock-np at Woodville last Tuesday night. The prisoner was being taken to Masterton to answer a charge of obtaining money by false pretences. It appears he took a strap which he had previously concealed on his person, and fastened it to the grating of the ceil, and then slipped his head through a noose. A son of his was sleeping in the cell with him, but knew nothing of it until awakened in the morning. An inquest will be held. A fire broke out at 3 o’clock yesterday morning in Bayne’s confectioner's shop, Wellesley street, Auckland, and was not extinguished till £IOO worth of damage was done. Stock and trade fixtures were insured in the New Zealand office for £376.
It has been definitely decided that the New Zealand Rifle Association meeting shall be held at Aroraho, about three miles from Wanganui. At a meeting of parishioners of St. James’ Church, Lower Hutt, Wellington, last Tuesday night, called ostensibly for the purpose of considering the finances of the parish, but in reality to call upon the Rev. Mr Cross, the incumbent, to resign, the latter, being in the chair, refused to put a resolution calling on him to resign, as being out of order. He also refused to put a modified resolution, as he had no intention of resigning. The meeting broko up without any resolution. July was scratched yesterday afternoon for the Dunedin Cup. A deputation from the Lyttelton Harbor Board waited ou the Minister of Public Works yesterday, requesting a reduction of charges for weighing and haulage at Lyttelton. Mr Richardson pointed out that the haulage charges were uniform throughout the colony. He had hoped that the reduction made in the railway charges were satisfactory to the people of Canterbury. Nothing definite resulted from the interview. At the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, on Tuesday afternoon, Frank McDowell was charged with embezzling £94 Os lid, moneys of Jas. McDowell. The accused had been employed by plaintiff in the disposal of soft goods, and it is alleged that he neglected to account for the above mentioned sum, which had been paid him. The principal evidence for the prosecution was taken, and the case was further adjourned until Tuesday next. H.M.S. Nelson sailed for Hobart on Tuesday morning. After a brief stay there she will visit Sydney, and then goes on a three months visit to the Islands. The Government Insurance Association have, it is understood, cancelled the proposal for a valuer for the whole of the coloay, and consequently no appointment will be made from the applications sent in. His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Major Jervois, and Mr J. D. Lance, H.H.R., arrived at Hokitika by coach from Christchurch on Tuesday evening. He was met twenty miles off by the members for the district and the Westland County Council, and at the town boundary by the Mayor and Borough Councillors, and a number of townspeople. He was accorded an enthusiastic welcome, and the town was brilliantly illuminated in his honor.
