FIRES.

The fire at Waipawa burnt itself out without doing any further damage than that enumerated in our last issue. Napieb, Jao, 5.

• Another big fire has broken out ai Makatoka. Qundrie’s mill and all the workmen’s dwellings are burnt, and further damage is feared. Blenheim, Jan, 4. There are very destructive bush fires along the line between Blenheim and Picton. One house and its contents were destroyed and several, others narrowly escaped. „The residence of Captain Baillie, M.L.C., was saved yesterday by the exertions of the neighbors adjoining. A disastrous bush fire is also raging in the Upper Pelorous Valley. A house and its contents were'destroyed, and another narrowly escaped. The telegraph line is damaged, one pole being burnt, and the line men had to ride more than a mile between the two fires in order to; repair the wires. They had to lay their heads on the horses’ sides and let them take (heir course. Dense smoke and flames from the burning bush at Rai Valley, have rendered travelling difficult lately. Numerous grass fires are raging on the hills and feed is being parched up, Auckland, Jan, 4.

Bush fires have j)een raging at Drum nald Brothers’ Bush, Kaukapukana. for four days. Besides growing bush, and felled and squared timber, two cottages valued at £l6O were burned. Dunedin, Jan. 5. The fire at Horsburg’s was confined tc two rooms. Most of the damage was by water. The insurances are nearly £4OOO, in the Victoria, New Zealand, and Loudon and Lancashire Offices. The premises were owned by W. Taylor, and insured in the Colonial Office for £SOO, and in thn National for £BOO.
