ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Dec. 81. Large withdrawals of gold have taken place for South America. Fully half a million has been shipped by this week's mail. Mr G. 0. Trevelyan repudiates the proposal to establish an Irish Parliament. Exhibits are now being received for the Indian and Colonial Exhibition. The stocks of frozen mutton are ui> usually low, and prices have improved a farthing por lb. Jan. 1. Sir Saul Samuel and Mr MurraySmith, the Agents-General for New South Wales and Victoria, will revise the conditions under which mails are at present conveyed to Australia before fresh tenders are called. The British Government are preparing to negotiate with the Soudanese for a pacific settlement of the Soudan difficulty. Cairo, Jan. 1. General Stephenson telegraphs that he is advancing along the Nile as fast as circumstances will permit. Tb 0 British cavalry have now reached Sayd, while the infantry have proceeded as far as Koyeh, about Jl5O south of Wady Haifa. The rebel forces are estimated at fully 39,000. Constantinople, Dec. 31. In consequence of the armistice, both Bulgaria and Servia have demobilised their reserve forces, but the standing armies of the two countries will still remain in the field. Calcutta, Dec, 31. Earl Dufferin, the Governor-General of India, has issued a proclamation formally announcing the annexation of Burmah by Great Britain. _♦ AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbourne. Jan. 1. The Victorian quarterly and yearly revenue returns were published t6-day. The revenue for the quarter ended December 81st amounts to L 1,570,000, being a decrease of L 19,000 compared ] with the corresponding period of last year. The falling off is chiefly in re- < ceipts for land sales, the railway revenue showing an increase ou the same period of L 40,000. The total revenue for the twelve months is L 6,250,000, being an increase oa last year of L. 60,000.
The demands of the laboreis not having been acceded to by the masters, the men have definitely decided to strike work, rejecting the proposal for 48 hours' work per week. Altogether 870 men are involved in the strike. The shipowners arc taking active steps to replace the men locally and from other colonies, while the laborers rely on the support ot the vauous trade Unions. Mrs Sala, wife ot tne wen-known journalist, died last night.
Tho match between the Eleven which is about to proceed to England and the combined Victorian team was commenced on the Melbourne ground this morning. Th« Victorian team won (he toss, and decided to go first to the wickets. Thpy were all disposed of for 135 runs. The Australian Eleven then went in, and when the stumps were drawn bad secured 69 runs for the less two wickets, Scott and Mcllwraith being not out for 2G and 40 respectively. The British Postmaster-General has at length adopted a scheme for the division of postage on Australian letters, and tenders are being invited for the conveyance of mails, according to the agreement with New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Stdnby, Jan. 1. The first day's racing of the Sydney Tattersall's Club took place to-day. The principal event was ihe Tattersah's Club Cup, which resulted as follows :- Tempe, 1 ; Benbolt, 2 ; Friendship, 3. Eleven horses started, and the race was won by a length and a half. Time—3min. 37sec. Jan. 2. FiDe weather prevailed throughout the holiday, end the excursions and amusements were well patronised. The only fatal accident reported occurred yesterday, when a boat capsized in th* harbor, and f< ur persons were drowned. The bodies hare not yet teen recovered.
Adelaide, Jar. 1. The South Australian revenue returns give the year's revenue ns L 1,130 000, being LIBO,OOO below the prrceding twelve months, and considerably belon the amount estimated by the Treasurer six months ago. Hob art, Jan, 1. The Tasmanian yoar'y revenue returns are of a very favorable charaeter, the revenue having been well sustained.
