THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.
Writing on the 13th October tbs London correspondent of the Argus reports r—With over 100,000 carcases of frozen mutton in stock, and abundant supplies of fresh meat coming forward from Home and Continental sources, the frozen meat trade must of necessity exhibit depression. Daring the week the Doric and Kaikoura have arrived bringing heavy cargoes from New Zealand, and the Sorata is now coming up the channel with a considerable consignment from Australia, New Zealand mutton is realising 4d to bourne, B|d to 4d ; River Plata, 4d to 4£d ; English, 4d to 6£d ; and Scotch, 6£d to 7d. The Kaikoura’s cargo was offered for sale this morning, and realised 4d to 4^d. During the past week three new companies intended to deal with Australasian produce have been registered, with a fair prospect of being successfully floated. The first is the Nsw Zealand Produce Agency, with a capital of L 50,000 in L 5 shares,to taks over and develop the business hitherto conducted by the Australian Meat Company. With the view of extending the benefits of the frozen-meat trade, it is intended to establish numerous centres of supply throughout the United Kingdon, and open about 200 shops for the sale of Colonial meat. Another venture is the New Zealand and Colonial Consignment Company, capital L 50,000, to carry on the business of meat salesmen and provision dealers in all their branches. The third undertaking is the Colonial Wool and Finance Company, with a capital of L 250,000, in 1 LlO shares, to carry on the business of wool merchants and dealers in wool in all its branches.
