TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
| The usual monthly meeting of the Te--1 muka Road Board was held last Tuesday in the Road Board office. PresentMessrs Talbot (Chairman),- Hayhurst, Brown, Quinn, and Smith. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting 1 were read and confirmed. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of 530 i 16s 5d were passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read from Mr J. Woodm«n asking that one of the Road Board cottages might be let' to him. ' —Granted, at a rental of 4a per week. From Mr J. A. Youog asking that the gutter at Winchester might be cleaned out, and the big stones taken' off the footpath. He suggested that it should be let yearly to a local man to keep in order. -In reply to the Chairman the Overseer said that very little wanted to be dona. There was some grass growing in the gutters and the water would go off quicker if they were removed.—Mr Smith said Mrs Swinton had allowed gorse to grow on the footpath and it wanted clearing.— The Overseer was instructed to do what was deemed necessary. From the Secretary to the Harbor Board stating that Board had no piles for sale ibut that Mr J. Murdoch had some.—The Overseer was instructed to buy some piles.
From the Geraldine County Council asking for information ns to the amount of the Temuka rate roll, and also enclosing the following resolution— " That this Couocil recognises as a principle the repayment of subsidies granted under the Local Bodies Finance Bill to the Board upon whose rates the subsidies have been paid to the Council less any just debt retainable from such subsidies."
From the County Council stating thai the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board had claimed the Council's share of £2OOO for hospitals arid charitable aid in South Canterbury, the amount being £449 183 sd, aEd adding that the amount tho Temuka Board would have to contribute was£9Vl63 5cJ. overseer's report.
The Overseer's report was read as fallows:—
Tenders have been called for carting 350 yards of shingle on White's and part of Boiling Down roads. The works in hand are progressing favorably. Contract No. 43, shingling North Town Belt, is finished with the exception of breaking the stones. The road atßangitata recommended to be opened has been done. Several other small works have also been completed daring the month. I would recommend that George Town Road be for died. There are 16 chains, and it would cost about, per chain. The ends of a number of planks on tbe Temuka Bridge are rising from the girders, owing to (here not being sufficient substance to hold the spikes. I would suggest that the wheel ginrds bo removed and fastened down close to the deck.—l am, etc., F. Archer.
It was decided to form the George Town hoad, and to forward a copy of the clause in the repoit referring to the Temuka Bridge to the County Council. TENDERS. The only tender received for contract No. 51, gravelling Boifing Down Road, was that of Martin Dunn, the price being per yard.—The tender was accepted. SMALL BIRDS' NUISANCE. The Chairman brought up the question of the advisability of purchasing small birds and their eggs.—lt was decided to purchase eggs and small birds as usual. RESERVE AT WAITOHI. The Chairman said thev had a gravel reserve of two acres at Waitohi, and ii appeared to him the best thing they could do was to let it. He believed it could be lot to a working man, who could build a cottage on it, at a rental of £5 a year. —Afler the matter had been fully discussed it was decided to offer to lease it for a term of 21 years, at a yearly rental of £5 ; the tenant to build thereon a cottage, in which he would reside ;Jthe Bp<iid to give him any compensation for improvements at the expiration of the lease. NUISANCES. The Chairman said he thought it was desirable, in view of all the sickness in the district, that iho Road Board and Town Board should combine together to " constitute a Board of Health. At present the Road Board hail no Inspector of Nuisances, and it appeared to him it was necessary something should be After a long discussion the following resolution was adopted :—" That the Town Boaid be wntttm to, stating that this Board is of opinion that it is desirable for some action to be taken in the matter of carrying out the provisions of the Public Health Act, and that such action should be jointly undertaken both as to expense and management by the two Boards; that this Board have appointed their Chairman and Messrs Hayhurst and Brown as a Committee to meet any Committer their Board may appoint, such joint-Committee to report within a month." j The Board then adjourned. »
