♦ CANTERBURY WOOL SALES. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, held the opening wool sale of the season »t the Christchurch Wool aod Grain Warehouses on Monday afternoon in the presence of a large assemblage of buyers and sellers. Thejcatalogue was a fairly representative one of the various classes of wool grown, excepting greasy merinos, the few lots of which were very inferior and faulty. The bidding was spirited up to a level of prices indicating a drop on last year's opening rates of 2£d on merino and fine halfbred, and Id to lsd nn strong long stapled wools. Out of 640 bales snd 62 bags catalogued, 216 bales and 62 bags wro placed at the following pricea : Greasy meriDo, 5d to s|d ; do hnlfbred, 5d to 7£d ; do crossbred", 4£d to 6§d ; do lambs, 6d ; do Lincoln and Leicester, 4£d to 51; do pieces, lsd to 3£d ;do locks, Id to 2|d. ASHBURTON MARKETS. Mr E. G. Staveley (for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports on the Ashburton Market of November 17th, as follows: — At the Ashbarton sale to-day about 8000 sheep and a full supply of cattle were yarded. The values of sbeep had a downward tendency and competition was slack. Fat shorn erossbrtdi realised 8s Id to 10s 6d, forward merino wethers in wool, 9s sd, meiino ewes in wool, with a good percentage of lambs, 6s 3d to 6s 10<I, crossbred ewes in wool, with a heavy percentage of lambs, 12s 8d to 14s sd, medium half-bred hoggets in wool, 9» 6'l. There was a fair demand for cattle. Pat cows and heifers brought L 4 5s to L 7 lOa.in forward condition ; bullocks brought L 5 6b to L 6 5s ; dry cowi, L 8 toL4; young cattle sold at current values.
