TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.

Ad ordinary meeting of the Bourd was held on Wednesday. Present —Meaurs VV. Moody (Chairman), A Hayes, J. Wilson, J. H. Sutter, M.H.R., K. Elworfhy, E. Acton, K. F. Gaay, M. Jonas, add J. Talbot. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, a letter was read from the Oamaru Harbor Board re. their dredge. The Chairman stated that at an interview with the Chairman of the Oamaro Harbor Board he had learned thtt the dredge coat £16,000 ; it was insured for £2250 at £5 5s per cent. The rent to the Timaru Haabor Board would be £3OO per month. The labor per month would coat £l2O, fuel £44, oil £sl. The dredge worked to 25ft at low tides, and made t«'o trips per day three miles distant, carrying 200 tons each time, excavating a space of 50fi by 60ft (18in deep) per diem. Mr Elworthy, after a few remarks, moved, and it was carried—" That the Chairman be requested to make arrangements with the Harbor Board at Oamaru for the hire of their dredge for a period not longer than three months, at a rale not exceeding £3OO per month." Reaolved—" That the thanks of this Board be conveyed to the Hon. Launoelol Walker, M.L.C., and the Membars for Timaru, Gladstone, Wuimute, and Garaldine, for their services in

securing the passing of the Tirnaru Harbor Loan Bill." Messrs Jonds and Peters, the contractors for the Breakwater, wrote asking for an | extension of six weeks from date for the [ completion of contract No. 5, and adducing reasons therefor.—The Board decided that they would take the matter into favor* able consideration when the contract iscompleted. The Harbor Master reported against Mr A. White's request to moor a coal hulk in the harbor. Mr Goodall, C.E., wrote that he bad forwarded to the Marine Department plans of the Moody Wharf, showing high water maik at various dates and other details. It was evident there had been no accumulation of shingle.—lt was decided to return the plan to Mr Goodall, with the request that be would place on it the shingle line for each year. Mr Sutter referred to his own allusion to the railway goods rates at the late mooting of ratepayers at the Theatre Royal. He had on that eccasion stated that it was cheaper to ship grain in 100 ton lots to Lyttelten from Timaru than Temuka ; and since then Mr Talbot had communicated with him on the subject, evidently doubling the correctness of the statement. He wished now to reiterate the statement, and to refer the public to' the tariff for r roof. The Harbor Master reported the arrival during the month of 29 vessels and the departure of 31, the whole being worked at the wharf. He stated that the Priestman dredge had been employed deepsning the berths at the outer end of the wharf. The Clerk of Work* reported that Breakwater Contract No. 5 was completed for a distance of 434 feet, and the foundation blocks for the remainder of the *■ contract were nearly a!l laid ; four monoliths would completa the . contract; Moody Wharf had now reached a length. of 290 fet t, and more piles were wanted ; he suggest-") that tenders should be invitad for 2000 tons of cement, and stated that 201 ma of steel rails and fastenings were wanted. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Hayes, seconded by Mr Gray—" That the question of floating the loan be placed in the hands of the Finance Committie to obtain all necessary information, and report to a special mett ng on December let." Mr Gray moved, and Mr Hayes seconded —" That, tinder* be called for 250 feet extension of break the engineer to prepare plans and specificat;ons, tender* to be in by J-in nary 14th, 1886, and to provide for whatever extension the Board may require at schedule rates." Mr Sutter objected to the work beiog carried on under the control of the pre* sent st.ff, and advocated delay.
