London, Nov. 2 A sum of £SOOO has been subscribed by the pub'ic for the defence of Mr Stead. A further aum of £IOOO is required. It i.H asserted that a Limited Liability Company is in existence whose business consists in the exportation cf girls to tlio Continent. Nov. 3. Mr Stead, editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, against whom proceedings have been taken in connection with the alleged abduction of the girl Lily Armstrong, has admitted that the statements made byMrs Jarred, who was called as a witness for the defence, and who made some astounding assertions, are not to be relied on. The German-New Guinea Company has recommended Government to defer for a year the scheme for the colonisation of. the German portion of New Guinea. Mr Gladstone, who had announced his intention of leaving for Midlothian to-day in order to start upon his electioneering campaign, has postponed his departure till Monday next. Rowell, the well-known pedestrian, has challenged Scott, of New Zealand, to meet him in a go-as-you-please contest. Rowell stipulates that in consideration of the match taking place in New Zealand, his expenses shall be paid.
