A SiNOur.AB Sight.—The singular sight was lately witnessed of fire is»uing from the waters of the river Clyde, a few hundred y rdsb-low Bothwell Bridge, audit attracted to the scene thousands of curious spect.t!ors. For some time tack, near the mouth of the Andhenraith stream, and not far from the left bank of the river, tbe water has in one or tvo places been seen to bubble up, the largest of the agitated parts making a circle nearly a hot in cncumference. S'ill no heed was taken of the circumstances until the other day when an angler while wading in the stream, which, owing to the dry weather, is abnormally low, soratoh'ed a match to light his pipe, and in throwing it from him the water at onco caught five, and emitted a brilliant flume. It is now clear that the gas issuing from tbe mineral workings underneath is finding its way through a figure into the strata to the surface of the water and had been kindled by the lighted The boys amused themselves trying, ineffectually, r,o put out tha tongue of flame, which at night rose to a height of 4 or 5 feet. An Ownerless Hat.-—The representative of this paper who attended at Green Rayps the evening has sworn vengeance against all the Volunteers in New Zealand. There was found at Green HayeH on the following morning a hat for which there was no owner. This hat wan left at the office of this together with the information that it had been left behind by our representative on the previous evening. Now our repre-s-niuive in one of those who belong to the—well, not the Blue Ribbon Army exactly, but fo those who sympathise with them, Nothing pleases him better than to see o'her people drinking cold water while he is contributing largely to the Customs revenue. He fell highly edified by seeing the Mayor of Timari'. —about whose conversion Mr Burnett made ho much noise—drinking the health of Her Most Gracious Majesty 'he Queen in vast tumblers ©f cold water. Being thus a great admirer of cold-water driDkers, aud a sympathiser with Blue Ribbonism, be feole greatly hurt at having been suspected of having left the festivities bailees, nnd he takes this opportunily of stating that he did not. The hat has been sent to the wrong man. Unleas we make a great roiatuke, it belongs to the representative of the Timaru Herald. We have come to this conclusion owing to its sisss and shape. It is just larga enongh to fit the head of the Timern Herald's representative, but not any way ner.r capable of holding the vast intellect that represented this paper. The Imfc i» ftill in our possession, and the owner can have it at any moment be likes. Good Wobdb—Feom Good Authority. fecMy at the run of your American Co 's Hop Bitters.
