After several breaks away the field were despatched on pretty even terms, the oolori of Trenton, Liverpool, Lord Exeter, Thunderbolt and Britisher being the most conspicuous when the flag fell. Sweeping past the carnage stand, Thunderbolt was at the head of affairs, Prometheus lying second.: Passing I the Stand the first time, Prometheusidisplaceri Thunderbolt of the lead, First Chester lying next, Trenton third, with Nordenfeldt, » length away, fourth. Rounding the turn bj tho river; Thunderbolt and Chester took » clear lead of two lengths. Passing ;along the river turn Grace Darling, who had been last when passing the Stand, now improved her position, and joined the front divieion, Liverpool, even at this early stage in the ractailing hopelessly in the rear. Passing tho Saltwater river bridge the positions were First Chesttr, Thunderbolt, Nordenfeldt, onH Trenton, Velocipede and Metal coming verv fa*t on the outside along with Cerise am) Blue and Despot. Opposite the , obatioirt* Thunderbolt, Velocipede, Cerise and Blue, St. John and Nordenfeldt comprised the leading division, Lesbia being well up. Trenton, Sheet Anchor, and Grace Darling now made a forward movement, aad approaching the straight Cerise and Blue, accompanied bj St. John, rushed to the front, followed closolv , by Sheet Anchor, Nordenfeldt, Grace Darling and Trenton. Cerise and Blue led into the straight half a length in front ofiSt. John, but Sheet Anchor, who came very fast, wrested premier position and assumed a clear two lengths lead, Blink Bonny- at tho same time making a good run from the ruck, in the midst of which Eobertson on Trenton was- making strenuous efforts to get'out. Nordenfeldt was lying in a good position a.< they approached the carriage paddock, bu on Gruce Darling making her effort she goblocked between Nordenfeldt and Blinl. Bonny. Meanwhile Trenton had got clear of Iho field and.came up under the whip, am Grace Darling also getting an opening drew out from the ruck, and a desperate struggle ensued.' Although the latter and Trenton struggled gamely they could not get on even terms with Sheet Anchor, who gained the judge's verdict by a head from Grace. Darling 'lVenten, half a head away from the mare, third, Nordenfeldt fourth, then came Minerva, Blink Bonny, Lesbia, and ,St. Lawrence, who were leading a straggling tail, the last being Bosworth and Yellow Hammer. Time—3min 29isec. The New Zealand horse Liverpool, whose chance at one time was much fanciod, would not gallop a yard, and never showed pryminently in the race, while Trenton covered himself with glory by the part he took in, the tremendous struggle, and under great difficulties. The owner of Sheet Anchor wins £20,000, and Corrigan, the trainee, £7OOO. The victory proves Sheet Anchor, who is a hurdle-racer, to be a great horse, but had there been a couple more strides to go both Trenton and Grace Darling would have beaten him. This being the first time that Mick O'Brien has piloted home the winner of the Melbourne Cup, ho was congratulated -for his duplay of iockeyship. . J. Williams; who had the mount of Grace Darling, .also rode splandidly. The punishment of Treaton in the race was something terrible. Nordenfeldt was well placed throughout the.race, and finished with lemarkable gameness considering the heavy impost. The time is faster than Martini-Henri's 1884 Cup time, which until now was the fastest on record. The Hon. J. White's stable is delighted with Nordenfoldt's performance. The "Ring" have been hard hit by Sheet Anchor's win.
