The Zealandia with the October colonial mails arrived at San Francisco on the Ist, two days m advanoe of. due date. The Australia with the London, October mails left San Francisco on the 24ih ultimo, timetable date. It is stated Wahanui has freely given all his land required for the North Island trunk line. The following are the New Zealand Commissioners for the Indian and Colonial Exhibition, 1886 :—Sir F. D. Bell, President and Executive Commissioner ; Dr J. von Haast, C.M.G., Commissioner in charge of exhibits ; Lord Normanby, Sir James Ferguson, Sir Thomas Gore Browne, Sir Penrose Julyan, Sir Charles Clifford, Sir John Hall, the Hon. Alfred Domett, the Hon. W. Gisborne, Mr Thomas Russell, C.M.G., Mr Harris (of Bing, Harris and Co., Dunedin), Mr R. 0. Reid (Hokitika), Mr Larkworthy (of the Bank of New Zealand), Mr F. Ross (of Ross and Glendinning, Dunedin), Mr Cowlishaw (Christchurch), Dr Buller, C.M.G., Mr Dalgety and Mr Donald Larnach. This list may possibly yet be added to. The Diocesan Synod at Dunedin was opened on Tuesday. In his address Bishop Neville stated that during the year by special efforts the indebtedness had been reduced by £2500. At the City Police Court, Dunedin, on Tuesday, Wong Tan was f|ned jJIQO for smuggling opium, A poll of ratepayers of Invercargill was taken on Tuesday on the question of adopting thelnvercargill Loans Consolidation Act, and it resulted in the Council's proposals being approved by an indisputable majority, the figures being 842 for and 92 against. Under the new Act it is proposed to borrow £130,000 to pay off £90,000 of the present indebtedness, and expend the ball an ce in water and gas works drainage and street improvements.
