It shows that Englishman are not sleeping on a bed of roses in the Boer territory : 21st, 1885.—Dear Sir,—l am employed by the Transvaal Syndicate (Limited), and was instructed by Mr Chester, the Manager of the Company, to put up a hut on the farm California and collect the Caffre rents. This I did, and hail stored 30 nuids of mealies. It was necessary for me to go to one of our camps, so I left a Caffre in charge, hut on Saturday night was iniormed by the Caffres the Caffre had been driven away by a party of Boers (five) — vz,, M. J. Viljorn and his two sons, H. R. Breitenback, and S. P. Schutte. So 1 rode over on Sunday morning to see (lie
Boers, and to hear what explanation they had for taking the place by force. After a great many words I went inside the hut, when Viljorn ordered his two sons to put me out. This they were unable to do, eo Messrs Breiienback and Schulte joined them, and fueled me. Feeling aggrieved at being turned nut in such a rough manner of the lint I had built myself, when I got free I struck the biggest, and the whole five laid violent hands on me, some holding me while others hit me with their fists, then they struck me with a stick as thick as roy wrist. While on the ground they kicked me about the face and body, 'then, with a cry of ‘ the strop, 1 tour held me face downwards, whi I ®. another gave me about.fifty cuts-wtlh a neck strop. I was suffering so severely that I asked for pardon, and crawhd away and laid under a tree. In a minute, or two they called for mo to run and calcli my horse. I fell down fn m uttep yyeaknesg when one of them hit me across the arm and thigh with a pole, , Atj last managed to crawl away to a dry. gully, and after some time got to a kraal. 1 am giving this to Mr Chester, and should feel obliged if you would take steps to procure me reparation.—"Vourg ♦ ruly, James Donaldson.”
