London, Sept. 30. Mr Gladstone, speaking with reference to the position of the Christian population in the Balkan provinces, advises them to imitate the moderate attitude assumed by the Powers in regard to matters in dispute as the beat means of securing a favorable settlement. Oct. 1. A letter is published in Truth from G. A. Sala, who is now visiting the Australian colonies. It indicates that Mr Sala has an ambition to become a member of the House of Commons. Mr Sala describes the members of the Melbourne Yorrick Club as “ a gang of cads " A subscription is about to be opened here with the object of raising funds to provide equipment for Mr H. 0. Mr Finch Hatton, one of the members for South Lancashire in the House of Commons, who recently visited the Australian colonies, has asserted that the statesmen of Queensland have been robbing the colony for the purpose of filling their own pockets. The funeral of the Earl of Shaftesbury was solemnised to-day at Westminister Abbey, but the interment took place at Dorset.
