The Legislative Assembly last night rejected, by a majority of one, the ciausc io the new Licensing Act prohibiting the employment of barmaids. Sydney, Sept. 25.

Eight persons in all have been placed iu quarantine iu connection with the outbreak of smallpox in Uaudwick. It is believed the disease was contracted originally by the mother some weeks ago. The Health Officer reports that the two Raudwick smallpox patients are improving, but the third is in a very dangerous condition at present. Arrived—R.M.S. Zealaudio, from Auckland, Sept. 27. Further cases of smallpox have been reported to the sanitary authorities, In one instance the disease attacked a seaman on hoard the s.s. Gunga, which vessel lately returned here from Melbourne. The source of the disease is unaccounted for. the other case made its appearance m Druitt street. The patients and occupants of the house have been removed to the North Head quarantine station. The Union Company’s s.s. Tekapo arrived here on Friday evening from Wellington. Adelaide, Sept. 25. The British Indies Steam Navigation Company have concluded arrangements for establishing a regular line of steamers between Adelaide and Calcutta, proceeding via Torres Stia'ts. Mr Service expects it to commence shortly. The South Australian Government has increased the reward offered lor the arrest of Woods, the absconding accountant in the Bankruptcy Court, to £IOOO. Sept. 27.
