The contents of the will of Sir Moses Montefiore were committed to the Exchequer by Mr Daws, solicitor. Joseph Sebug is designated reniduary legatee. Eastcliff Lodge and the estate on which it stands are strictly entailed on his heir Instsuctions are left to Dr Lowe to edit and publish the late baronet’s memoirs. A substantial legacy is bequeathed to his niece, Mrs H. Gudgalla, and a very large number of other bequests are specified, including several endowments. The sums bequeathed to London charities amount to £13,000, and those to the Holy Land to £31,000. Altogether, between £50,000 and £60,000 is left to charities. The personality of the will does not exceed £400,000. On August 17th ten arrests were mads iu Rome of members of a criminal society, which has been operating in that city, in Naples and Spoleto. The search of the house of a member of the society, a former Government official, revealed the fact that correspondence had been carried on with agents in New York for the sale to Americans of Italian girls, who had been bought for small sums in the Southern Provinces. The prices asked ranged from £4O to £BO.

Signor Vicci and bis wife, who were arrested with Signor Dovideo, editor of the Moniteur de Rome, for selling a Foreign Power a plan of the Italian maratirae defences, attempted to commit suicide on August 18th. Dovideo intended the plans for France. A valuable collection was stolen from the Royal Armoury in Turin on August 20tb, including four collars of the Order of Annunziala, studded with diamonds. The custodian committed suicide. Signor Clearco, Italian Consul at Monaco, was ai rested, charged with having embezzled 70,000d015. Mr Pearce, of John Elder and Co., was assaulted with astout stick by Mr Francis, an Inspector of Customs, on August 13. The assailant was accompanied by his wife. He alleged that Pearce had seduced his daughter. A reporter of the Pall Mall Gazette waited on Pearce, who said the charge was absolutelty false, and that it was a case of black-mail of a peculiarly bad kind. An Atlantic despatch says that Francis has commenced criminal proceedings for a libel against Pearce in consequence of this statement.
