TIMARU PRODUCE MARKETS
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limittd, report on the grain and meat markets of New Zetland, under date 10th inst., as fol'ows ; —Wheat —A firm tone has characteiiaed the wheat market during the past month. Prime milling is now in lequest, and as stocks of velvet and Tuscan of good quality are getting low, prices are rather higher. Prime velvet and Tuscan are now worth 3s to 3s 2d, while red chaff may be quoted at up to 2s 10d ex store, A considerable quantity of wheat is still in growers’ bands, and, now that sowing is almost ever, will shortly be delivered in town. We have lately placed a few lines at above quotations. Shipments for the past month have been 5809 sacks. Oats A good demand is being experienced for oats, the values are about Is 101 to Is lid for bright heavy milling ; lsßd to Is 10d for short stout feed and discolored milling ; bright Tartars and Danish, Is 8d to Is 9d ; and long discolored feed, Is 6d to Is Bd. At above quotations we have placed several lines for local consumption find for shipment to Northern ports. Exports for the past month have been 3386 sacks. Barley—Since our last we have placed some 800 sacks of good medium at 3s f.o.b. Feed sorts are worth 2s to 2s 6d.
ASHBURTON LIVE STOCK MARKET
Mr E. G. Staveley (for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports on the Ashburton market on Tuesday :—A moderate number of sheep were yarded, principally stores. The prevailing dry weather rendered buyers chary, and many lots were withdrawn. Fat crossbred wethers brought 16s ; merino do, 9? 3d ; ctossbred hoggets, 10s 6d to 12s 3d ; poor merino wethers, 5s ; forward do, 6s 9d to 7s ; crossbred ewes, with a good percentage of lambs, 15s; two and four-tooth wethers, 11s ; sound-mouthed merino ewes in lamb, 7s 91. There were moderate entries in pigs and cattle, and no alteration in values. Eighteen-months heifers, 45s ; two-year-old do, G4s ; springers, £4 10s and upwards. Very few fai cattle were yarded. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report of the Sydney markets under date September Bth as follows ;
Butter—(Free.)—The small supplies now received from New Zealand are being well taken up at good prices, and we have realised as high as 2s for Taranaki “ rolls.” A heavy fall in rates may be looked for shortly. Cheese—(Duly 2d per lb)—Remains without alteration, and anytliiugbut Now Zealand loaf is hard to place at over 7d, Wheat—(Free.) Demand slackened considerably, and market fully stocked with second-class qualify New Zealand. New Zealand up to 3s 3d, and good fowls,’ feed 2s 6d to 2s Bd.
Barley—(Free.)—We have made considerably sales of good feed qualities up to 2s Bd, which we regard as a fair market quotation. Oats—(Free.)— Are now showing some animation, and we have cleared out all our late consignments of heavy feed at up to 2s 5d ex wharf, and we look for higher rates to rule shortly, although heavy shipments are to hand and to arrivo from New Zealand ports. Potatoes—(Free.)— As anticipated in our last, in tho face of large supplies, prices have declined, the present market quotation being £3 15s to £4 for New Zealand blue Derwents.
Malt—(Duty 6d per bushel.) —Very quiet, and anything short of prime quality quite neglected. Flour—(Free.)— I The large forward purchases made in the earlier part of the season restrict the demand, and an increase in price on late rates is hard to obtain. Rest brands of Australian are selling slowly at £9 to £lO, while roller make commands 10s per ton extra. Horse Stock—(Free). —A good demand has been experienced for active draught horses, but prices do not show much improvement. Heavy draught mares and geldings range from £2B to £4O. Some good figures were paid for heavy draught stallions during the Show week ; 3 5-year-olde making 465, 285 and 275 guineas respectively.
Melbourne, Sept. 15,
The Melbourne Manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Limited, reports of the local markets as follows : Shipping wheat is firmer at 4s 2d to 4s 8d per bushel ; malting barley, weak, 4s to 4s fid. New Zealand oats— Prices for feed sorts have a hardening tendency, and there is a better demand for all descriptions of milling oats ; New Zealand feed oats, 3s to 3s 2d ; milling sorts, 3s 2d to 3s 8d ; New Zealand oats, under bond, 2s 3d to 2s sd,
ENGLISH MARKETS.
London, Sept. 13,
The wheat markets show no signs of revival. Wheat ex warehouse is quoted at 365, and ex ship at 35s 61. Five offcoast cargoes have been sold at prices ranging from 33s 6d to 34s 9d. For forward shipments there have been no sales.
The wool market is weaker, the large reserves of old stock tending to increase the present depression, The increasing supplies which are being received from the La Plata district in South America threaten a permanent reduction in the price of Australian merinos. The number of bales catalogued is 120,000, and the number of withdrawals is 21,000.
