Burglars entered the ironmongery warehouse of Messrs Morrin and Co. (Auckland), on Saturday or Sunday night last. They burst open the cash-box, and stole about £SO.
Another difficulty has risen in connection witli the Wellington Hospital between Dr Kennedy, the new resident-surgeon, and Miss. Marsden. The latter contends she has supremo power over the female department, while the Doctor declines to take office unless he has supreme control over the whole of the institution. At the Hospital Committee meeting on Monday afternoon it was unanimously decided that the Doctor should have supreme control of the Hospital. At a meeting of which representatives from all of the Friendly Societies were present at Wellington, on Monday night, it was decided that Thursday, the 15th October, should be the day on which a demonstration should be held there. It is proposed to hold a monster demonstration in town at the Basin Reserve, where sports will be held, Two other demonstrations will be held the same day and a torchlight procession in the evening, with tableaux emblematic of various Orders. The Governor will be asked to proclaim a public holiday. A deputation from the Friendly Societies waited cn the Minister for Public Works at Wellington on Tuesday afternoon regarding a reduction in fares. Mr Richardson agreed to lay on excursion trains from all parts of the cdony at seven shillings and five shillings per hundred miles, first and second class respectively, special trains being laid on to connect steamers.
The residence of Mr Gillespie, Maxwell Road, Blenheim, whs broken into lasi Monday night. Two pounds ten shillings were abstracted from a chest of drawers in a bedroom. The thief got away without being heard by two ladies who were the only occupants of the house at the time.
Mr H. J. Mathias, Chairman of the Selwyn County Council, died on Sunday of brain fever. He was an early settler, arriving here in 1851, and he was very widely respected. A genera! meeting of the West Coast Railway League was held at Christchurch on Monday afternoon. Mr W. Chrystall’s resignation as Chairman was received. He resigned in consequence of the Committee having recommended an alliance with Nelson and Westland. A long discussion on the advisability of continuing such an alliance took place, and the meeting adjourned for three weeks. A. sub-OommiUee was appointed to draw up a programme of future action in the meanwhile.
The Kaitangata Coal Company (Otago) declare a ten per cent dividend, and carry £3200 forward to reserve. From enquiries made the body found recently off the Queen street w harf, Auckland, has been identified as that of James Reid, formerly of Waitara, and an old soldier of the 65th Regiment. The Cambria Company, Thames, has obtained 808 ounces of gold from a fortnight’s operation, and a dividend of eighteen pence per share, representing £2362 10s, has been decla r ed. Since last year the Company has distributed the large sum of £20,475 in dividends. At the Supreme Court sittings, Wanganui, on Monday, the following sentences were passed Thomas Fitzgerald, for larceny from a dwelling-house, one mouth with hard labor ; for horse and sheep stealing, Urupa 18 months ; To Hutana Wetenga, for house-breaking, four months. Patrick Bradley, for larceny from the person was found guilty, but sentence was deferred.
A verdict of manslaughter against a patient who is a confirmed lunatic and therefore unaccountable for his actions, was returned by the jury at an inquest on a Chinaman at SeaclifE(Otago), on Tuesday. The warders hearing some scuffling found a patient named Lenegren kicking the Chinamen, who died shortly afterwards.
The Unit tarring case was again before the Wellington Court on Tuesday, and Walden was further remanded till Tuesday next. The evidence was of little interest.
During a heavy N.W. Gale at Wellington, on Monday a pile driver and donkey engine on (lie Queen’s wharf were blown into the harbor.
A large audience, including the Governor, Lady Jervois, and suite were present at a lecture on “Russia” given by Mr G. A. Sala, at Wellington on Tues day night. The lecture lasted two hours, and was extempore. Two more lectures will be given. Mr Sala leaves for Christchurch on Friday. At the Plumpton Park races, on Monday, Mr T. H. Lance was knocked down by a runaway horse and sustained a slight concussion of the brain. He was unconscious for some hours.
On Tuesday morning, at Christchurch, Mr Justice Johnston gave judgement in (he case of George Drain on the question as to whether, in the administration of a bankrupt’s assets, the Crown is entitled to priority over other creditors. He held that as in England the Crown had such priority before the passing of the Act of 1883, and as the provision of that Act depriving the Crown of that peiogalivc, except in certain cases, had not been adopted by the New Zealand Act, the right of the Crown must prevail. The creditors of Neill Bros,, Dunedin, have decided to vest the estate in three trustees, Messrs G. L. Dannistoun, Law, and Bartleman.
On Monday night a concert was given in Christchurch on behalf of Mrs W, C. Cooper, the widow of one of (he victims of the late coaching accident, when the handsome sura of £IOO was realised. The exhibitors at the Exhibition are aggrieved at ihe delay which has occurred in the appointment of Judges, and at a meeting on Monday appointed a depu'a lion to wait on the Executive Committee of the Exhibition and lay their complaints before them.
