An immense and distinguished audience assembled at Auckland to hear Geo»go Augustus Sala on Wednesday night, although only twenty-four hours’ notice of the lecture was given. For more than two hours, without reference to book of note, the great Journalist gave a most graphic description of the Russian Empire concluding with his opinion as to the probability of war between England and Russia. Me held his audience from first to last. Great regret is expressed that Mr Sala cannot prolong his stay. He leaves for Wellington, and on his way back to Melbourne will lecture in Tasmania. He was entertained at the Northern Club with a select party by Mr C. C. Macmillan. He made a speech referring to his colonial impressions. Geo. Shepherd, one of the assistant stewards of the Manapouri, charged with smuggling tobacco ashore at Auckland, was lined double value of the goods or 14 Jays’ imprisonment. A well-known infdmv at Wellington was charged under the amended Police Statue with being the occupier of a disorderly house, etc. The prosecution was a private one, being brought by residents in the neighborhood of the house. Interest was attached to it through its being the first case under the amended Act. After some evidence was taken, counsel fcr defendant offered on her behalf to close the house and leave the neighborhood, but counsel for plaintiffs, while acknowledging the closing of the bouse was the primary object, declined io abandon the case, as, on the grounds of public morality, he was instructed to press for a conviction. The case was adjourned. On Wednesday Bridget Campbell was committed for trial at the Supreme Court, Invercargill, for setting fire to a house at Avernal with intention to defraud the Standard Insurance Company.
