RUSSIAN POLICE FRAUDS.
Four persons implicated in allegrd frauds at Kerlch have, according to a correspondent, beeu arraigned before the Chief Criminal Tribunal at Odessa on & separate charge. The prisoner* are Maihovs'k), police-muster; Vclski, chief inspector of police; Yesterski, secretary to the police-master ; and the chief gaoler Metroline. The evidence adduced in tn ' s case discloses an extraordinary scandal. The names of some hundreds''of prisoners were duly entered on the police records mb serving their various terms of imprison, ment, but in reality theße prisoners weie ill secretly liberated ou payment. In one instance cited several of the released convicts, with the concurrence of the»» officials, broke into the suburban dwelling of a young married' couple. The man whs murdered in his sleep ; the woman escaped with some grievous woutads on the bead. The Chief Inspector of Police, Yolski, now appeared on the Bcene, and had the unfortunate woman conveyed to the hospital. She, believing in the de« monstration of sympathy and indignation of the inspector, entrusted him with th* sum of 1500 roubles which she had saved from the murderous and plundering g«ng, until she was convalescent. The woman recovered rapidly, and returned to find her home a heap of ruined walla. The police, probably believing her recovery impossible, had sold everything on the premises, and made a wreck of the house. Confronted with the Inspector of Police this poor woman was threatened with imprisonment, and her deposit of 1500 roubles with him was repudiated. Every hotel and public-house in Kertch wan compelled to pay a monthly tribute to these officials.
