A man named Hugh Reynolds has been killed at Waitangi, Auckland, by a log rolling on him while he was measuring timber.

Isaac Selva and Tarawhiti Hetaraka have been committed for trial at Mongonui, Auckland, for shooting cattle and using the meat. Over forty applications were received by the Education Board for the appointment of Head Master at the Central School, New Plymouth. The greater portion of the applications received came from the South Island. The following names were selected to be forwarded to the School Committee for approval;—H. Dempsey (Ashburton), J, O. Adams (Riverton), and W. Menziea (Tapanui). Three cases were brought this morning against Borough Councillors for breaches of the Municipal Corporation Act. G. Carson, of tho Wanganui Chronicle, was fined £IOO for voting while accounts due to him for advertising remained unpaid. Ten other cases against Carson were adjourned for a week. In a case against J. Murray j of Murray’s Foundry, the defendant pointed out that the work could not have been done anywhere else in Wanganui. He had never done any work which any other local tradesman could do. The cases against him were (adjourned for a week. In the case against J. Haird, the defendant had supplied trees for public domains. This case was also adjourned. An inquest was held at the Wellington gaol on Friday on the body of William Garrett. A verdict of death from acute bronchitis was returned. Tho funeral took place the same afternoon, and was attended by the Governor'of the gaol, the chief warder, and six convicts. A singular fact in connection with, the the inquest was that the foreman of the jury was one of the victims stuck up by Garrett at Mangatu. At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Exhibition, a suggestion was made that a festival week should be held, and cheap trips be made from all parts of die colony, whether oh the coast or interior; If the suggestion is carried out, the festival week will probably be hold in the middle of October.

The teacher was caught redhanded on the last occasion, and compelled to unlock the door.
