London, Sept. 1. The mails ex Orient R.M.S. Iberia were delivered to-day, via Naples, Fept. 2, Mr Parnell, addressing a public meeting at Dublin yesterday, deprecated the outrages which have recently taken place as damaging to the Irish cause. Mr Gladstone returned to town to-day from his voyage to Norway. His health seems to be re-established, and he is quite robust. The freedom of the City ot Dublin has been conferred upon Dr K. J. O’Doherty, a member of the Queensland Legislative Council, in recognition of the support given by him to the Irish cause in the colonies. In connection with the Caroline Islands difficulty, it is rumored that the German squadron at present stationed at Zanzibar has been ordered to proceed to those islands. Acute excitement is being manifested in Spain over the affair. it is announced that it is the intention of the Treasury to institute a prosecution against Mr Stead, of the Pall Mall Gazette, Mr Bramwell Booth, and other persons for the abduction of a girl named Lily Armstrong, in connection with the recent Jeffrey’s scandal. Sept. 8. Mr Cheescwnght, a surveyor, leaves in October to survey the land concessions applied for by Mr Anthony Hordern in connection with his proposed railway from Albany to York. The capital required for constructing the railway from Guilford to Geraldton, in Western Australia, as proposed by Mr John Waddington, has been subscribed by a syndicate, and the Company will be registered shortly. The P. and 0. Company have received their usual notice of the termination of their mail contract to ihe Government, A flying squadron Is at present being formed, and H.M. ships Yulage and Active have already been selected. Cholera has made its appearance a| Gibraltar, The Governor of Herat has been absolved from the charges brought against him by Colonel Ridgway of tampering with letters, etc., addressed to members of the Afghan Boundary Commission. Berlin, ftept. 2. The International Telegraph Conference has virtually decided to reduce the Press rate for telegrams between Europe and Australia, Government having assented to a redaction, on the overland section. Roue, Sept. 8. Cholera is reported to have broken out in Parma, and the disease is also stated to have made its appearance in other parts of Italy,

Melbourne, Sept. 2. Correspondence extending over a period of eighteen months between the Hon. Mr Sargood and Colonel Disney, Commandant of the Victorian forces, was laid upon the Table of the Legislative Assembly last night. The 'letters give evidence of, the complete want of harmony which existed for some time between them. Mr Sargood objected to Colonel Disney making reports to the Governor, Sir H. Loch, as Oommander-in-Chief, and afterwards insisted on all communications from Colonel Disney being addressed to the Secretary of the Defence Department instead of to himself, Mr Sargood further plates that he considers Colonel Disney and other Imperial officers serving in Victoria as akin to members of the Civil. Service. The Argus, commenting on the correspondence, characterises Mr Sargood’s letters as intolerably offensive, arrogant and supercilious,, and considers that he exhibits clumsy and insolent sarcasm. Sept, 3. The man Robinson, charged with robbery from the Hotham branch of the Federal Bank, has been committed for trial, bail being accepted. Sydney, Sept, 3. The Cnion Steamship Company’s Waki.iip.., from Wellington, arrived this morning. The pame Company’s
Manapouri left for Auckland this afternoon.
Mr George Augustus Sala, who is a passenger per s.s. Manapouri, will commence a tour of New Zealand at the end of this week. His opening lecture will be delivered in Auckland.
