TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of tha Temuka Road Board was held last Tuesday. Preseut—Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), E, Smith, J. T. M. Hayhurst, Job Brown, and M. Quinn. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £56 ware passed for payment.

From Mr Edgeler, asking that Princess street might be opened, as he had to go 244 yards out of his way when leering his house, and stating that if all fences like those of Douglass' and Washington's were allowed there would be a dogen fences across the road.—This subject was left for the Overseer to report upon. From Mr Owen Oarr, asking to be allowed to erect a slip.panel across Johns street as Mr Douglas had been allowed to erect one.—The Chairman said if this were allowed it would interfere with the the traffic eventually, but at present no harm could be done'by allowing Mr Carr permission to erect the slip-panel. No one would be benefitted by making Douglas take down his fence.—After the subject had been considered Mr Carr's application was granted, subject to being revoked at any time. From Mr A. Clyne, complaining of the state of the ditch fronting on hii land, and asking for pipes for a crossing at the entrance to his house. He would be prepared to pay for a Bhare of the cost of clearing the ditch, —The Overseer said he had never seen any water in the ditch to hurt anyone. He could not see where it could come from. Be had pipes which he had already got from the Board.—The request for pipes was granted, but the Board decided not to interfere with the ditch.
From MrT. Palmer, stating that the people had been put to great expense oh account of the Oxford bridge.—Subject deferred until the Overseer's report was considered.
From Mr W. McLeod, stating that the drain along the Rangitata road by Mr Macdonald's property was iu a very bad state. —The Overseer said the matter had been attended to.
From Mr Griffiths, asking that a drain be opened at the south end of the Orari railway crossing lending to the meeting room. —The Overseer was instructed to report to next meeting. From Mr W. Palmer, asking that a drain be cut from the creek co*ning out of Greenaway's paddock to Cooper's to convey water from his land, aa there was no other watercourse.—lt; was decided that the request could not be acceded to, as it would divert the water from its natural course.
From the Clerk of the County Council, offering the Board as much old timber as they required for patching, and enclosing extract from Engineer's report urgirjg tho necessity for keeping the bridges clean, and stating that if the bridges has been kept clean in the past would not require repairing now. —It was decided to see to the bridges being kept clean as suggested ; also, that the Board would purchase timber at former pr'ces. From the Clerk of the Geraldine Road Board to the effect that the difference between the two Boards' proposals was so small that the Geraldine Road Board would respectfully request their proposal to be carried out. The proposals of the Geraldine Board were then read. The sentence: " That, any expenditure amounting to £2OO should be sanctioned by both Boards," was altered so ns to read " That any work requiring an expenditure of £2O should be sanctioned by both Boards, find that the total expenditure by either Board for a year, except such as may have been sanctioned, shall not exceed £100." Thus amended the proposal was agreed to. From Mr Sperrey, asking for a return of the rateable value of the property in th« district. —Replied to. Fmm the Native Lands Office, and the lion. Mr Rolleston in reference to the road to George Town, about which trnre is a dispute with the natives.—The matter was left in the h*nds of Mr Rolleston, who has promised to bring the question to a satisfactory solution. From Mr Eichbaum asking that his name be taken oft the list of ratepayers as he had sold tho land to Mr A. Grant.— Agreed to, provided Mr Grant does not object. From Mr Sperrey, itating that before rates could be paid on native lands it would be necessary to amend the demand made.
overseer's refokt. The Overseer's report was then read as follows :•
Sir, —Tenders have been called for the following worbs : Shingling part of Kakahu and Boiling Down roads, footpath Denmark street, Rangitata fords, a or! shingling, Rangitatn. Contract No. 37, clearing Canal drain, is completed and passed for payment. During' the past month several jobs of work that were necessary have been done. A pipe culvert has been put in. I estimated I could not put in a concrete culvert that would
meet all requirements for £—. The road at the bottom of the cutting near the H»ngitira creek, on the Rangitira Valley road, badly requires repairing, and a pips culvert putting across it. The willows at the Temuka bridge should be fenced and those near the bridge cut. I have prepared a list of the roads that are most in need of shingliDg, and an estimate of the cost of the same, I have nude inquiries in reference to abeam that would connect the footbridge at Palmer's road with the bank. I find one could be obtained of sufficient length for £33 delivered in Temuka.—l have, etc., F. Archer. It was decided to adopt the Overseer's suggestion with regard to the culvert on the Waitohi and Point Eoads ; also, that the Overseer cut the willows as suggested by him, and sell them to any one who. may require them at a fair price, say £1 per hundred. road* requiring repairs. "The Overseer reported that the follow- j ing roads would require shingling and repairing :—Waitohi road, 62 chains; from Main South Road to Rangitata railway station, 130 chains ; Middle Swamp - road, 105 chains ;. North Town Belt, 35 chains ; Upper Swamp road, 400 yards ; McN air's road, 35 chains ; Beattis's road, 17 chains; Talbot's road, 40 chains. The total cost would be £BO2 13s. It was resolved that the Main Waitohi road, Middle Swamp road, North Town Belt, and Cpper Swamp road should ha tendered for this month ; the Waitohi road to be let in two contracts. FINANCIAL STATEMENT. The Clerk laid a statement of the receipts for the cnrreat year on the table as follows :—Bank balance, £6OO 6s 3d ; outstanding rates for 1883-4, £SO 13s 4d; for 1884-5, £152 8s 8d ; for 1885-6, £Bl7 5s ; from other sources, £7B 7s 2d, making a total of £1,699 0s sd. It was decided that all rates should be eued for at once, including the smallest amounts. TENDERS. The following tenders were opened : Contract No. 38—Shingling Kakahu Road • M, Dunn, Is o£d per yard (accepted) ; W. HopkinsoD, Is 5d per ysid; W. Lewis, Is 2|d per yard. Contract No. 39-Shingling Boiling Down road : M. Dunn, Is Of d per yard (accepted) ; W. Lewis, Is 4sd. Contract No. 41— Forming footpath, Denmark street: W. Lewis, £7 6s 2d (accepted); M. Dunn, £6 lis l£d. Contract No. 42—Rangitata Fords : M. SSheehan, £24 (accepted); J. Stangar, £24 10s; D. McNab, £25. ' The tenders for Contract No. 40 were considered too high, and fresh tenders were ordered to be called. The Board then adjourned.
