CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS.

At the Addington Yards on Wednesday fairly large entries of all kinds of stock were yarded for the clay’s market. A medium attendance of buyers assembled. Market opem d with fat cattle, of which the quality, on the whole, was only second rate. A fair demand v/as shown, and sales made at late quoted values. Steers sold at from £5 10s to £9 15s, heifers £4 10s to £7 ss, being at the rate of from 20s to 22s 6d per 1001 b, A moderate entry of fat sheen yarded, demand middling ; sales made at about last week’s rates. Crossbred wethers sold at from 14s to 21s 9d ; ditto ewes, 13s 9d to IGs ; merino wethers from 7s 6d to 14s Gd. being an average rate of 2d per lb. In the s'ore sheep market a few lines were yarded, demand not being brisk. Sales were as follow Lines of hoggets, at 8s 7d, 10s Gd, 11a 9cl, and ]3s 3d ; a line of mixed two-tooths at 10s 7d, ami a line of merino ewes in lamb at 6s. The pig market was largely supplied, demand very dull, and n considerable reduction in values took'place. Porkers sold at from 14s to 21s ; baconers, 24s to 30s. A largo entry of store cattle were yarded, buyers very cautious, and sales made with difficulty. Lines of forward-con-ditioned steers, at £5 to £5 10s ; heifers, 45s to 67s 6d ; young cattle, 21s to 34-'. DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS.

At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday the following business was transacted :

Eat Cattle.—229 yarded. The bulk of these really good beef, a few lots prime, and odd lots inferior. For superior qualities biddings were brisk at about last week’s rates, but inferior beasts were difficult of sale at a material concession on former values. Best bullocks brought £8 10s to £ll 10s; medium, £6 to £8 ; cows up to £7 17a Gd, Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold on account of Mr Jas. Guild (Trevenna), 12 prime bullocks at from £9 5s to £ll 10s ; for Mr A. Grant (Temuka), 7 prime steers at £7 7s 6d to £8 ; Mr Donald Stronach sold on account of Mr Jas. Guild (Orari), and others, drafts, bullocks at up to £7 17s Gd, and cows up to £6 17s Gd. Donald Heid and Co. sold for Mr Jas. Guild (Orari), 6 bullocks at £lO 2s Gd to £lO ss. Beef, per 1001 b, 20s to 22s for prime and 17s Gd for inferior.

Fat Sheep.—2l9o penned, including 458 merinos. The trade having been well supplied by previous full markets were slow to operate except tor special lines, but taking the market throughout—and the sheep were of fair to good quality—prices declined from Is 6d to 2s per head. Of the merinos forward Mr White’s (Rakaia) again brought exceptional prices. The first shorn sheep of the season were on the market, some very good sheep. Merinos ranged from 8a to 13s, one special line from Mr A. White, Rakaia. bringing 21s ; crossbreds ranged from lis to 15s. A prime lot of halfbred wethers from Mr A, White, fetched 15s 9d to 18s. 70 shorn crossbreds from Mr M. Studholme’s, Waimate Estate, brought 10s 9d to 11s 3d. Mutton, barely 2Jd per lb. Early Lambs.—Nineteen penned, majority small, and only saleable at up to 6s 3d each. A few good lambs brought from 10s 9d to 12s.

Pigs.—lol penned mostly mediumsized baconers, porkers, and suckers. For the former two classes an advance of nearly 5s per head was obtained. Wellbred suckers up to 15s. Horses.—Wright, Stephenson, and Co quote first-class draughts at from £23 to £3O; medium, £l4 to £2O; first-class hacks and light harness horses, £l6 to £25; medium, £8 to £l4; light and inferior £3 to £6,

DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS,

The following is the report for the week ending Thursday last: Wheat. —A rising market. Few parcels of prime wheat obtainable. Prime white velvet and Tuscan are worth 3s 2d to 3s 4d ; one parcel brought 3s 6d. Other kinds are steadily improving and with light stocks forward promise better rates. Oats.—Stocks are short. First qualities are much inquired for, but offerings are limited, and holders expect a further rise. Best milling is quoted at Is lid to 2s ; superior feed, Is 9d to Is lid ; inferior and discolored, is 3d to Is Bd. Barley,— The principal buyers have been shipping at prices ranging from 2s to 3s, f.o.b. Locally, small parcels of malting have been quitted at 3s. Milling is worth about 2s. Potatoes. —Derwents bring 62s 6d to 70s per ton ; kidneys, 30s to 455. Turnips and carrots. —Demand limited and supply full. Grass Seeds —Market unchanged and very little business doing. Farmers’ lots are worth 2s 6d to 3s Od, according to quality ; machine dressed, 4s 6d to 5s per biivliel. Chaff, —Good quality, well cut, would comm .ud £3 per ton ; inferior is plentiful at £2 5s to £2 10s ; medium, £2 15s. Bulur. -Salt is wanted at up to 10£d for prime quality ; fresh, la to Is Id. Eggs. lOd per dozen. Sheepskins.—The tone of the market is much improved and competition .it the weekly sales held ou Monday last was keener at iieltei rates. Green crossbreds brought. 2s 10 I to 4s 9u ; do merinos, 2s 6d to 3s Ud : dry crossbreds, 10.1 to 4s ; do merinos Is Id to 3s 6d ; pelts, 13d, Hides. —The local demand continues brisk at former quotations—viz., for light and inferior ; up to 4jd and 4LI fot S'-und well trimmed and salted lots. Talow.—Best rendered brings IBs to 21s ; medium, up to 16s ; rough fat, 10* io 12s p» r cwt.
