CONCERT AT ORARI.

On Friday evening last a concert waa held in the schoolroom, Orari, in aid of a fund for the purpose of purchasing prizes and providing a treat for tht school children. The evening was beautifully fine, and. people attended from all parts of tho neighboring and surrounding districts, many coming from both Temuka W and Geraldine. As a result the was completely filled, a great many people having to stand. The management are to be congratulated on the complete success of their arrangements, and upon the \ results, both financial and otherwise, arising therefrom. The Chairman of the Committee, Mr Jas. Grigg, and Messrs Naughton and Binskin, Kssisted by others, did all in their power during the evening to secure the comfort of the audience, as far as the limited space of the schoolroom would a'low, and to Mr B'nskin is due the credit of <n iteria'ly assis'ing to carry through the long and varied programm". The Rev. Ge f ». Barclay presided (a position he always fills to adand in the course of his opening remarks, after asking from the audience a fair and impartial hearing for the several performers, briefly stated the object for which the concert was got up. He was glad to see the people of the district were taking an interest in the education of their children, as was evidenced by their going to sii'-h pains and trouble to provide them with rewards and marks of encouragement in their studies. He hoped the s-hool would a I vnys mainta ; n the satisfactory position it had held in the past. Miss M. Foster, of Geraldine, presided at th* piano, and the overture was executed with u degree of ski'l and taste which wasextremelj pleasing and received tho unanimous applause of the audience. Miss Foster accompanied those 0° tho singers who came p from Geraldine, and it is needless to any gave every satisfaction. The singing of the various performers was on the whole good, but ccores were rather the exception than the rule, and as the programme was a very lengthy ont— nearly thirty itemI—the 1 —the audience were quite right in not recalling the singers. Owing to the number of items it would be impossible to criticise the singing individually. We may mentioD, however, that the visitors gave their piecns in first-class s'vl', and it would be hard to find another place of ihe same s'ze as the Orari district which could boast of such a number of promising young musicians. The follow ing is the programme gone through : Solos : " The way through the woods," and "The Brook, " Miss Dunlop ; " The Midshipmite " and "Sailing," Mr Lodge ; . "Jessie's Dream," Miss Miller; coiak song, Mr Binskin ; "The Golden Miss Hessy Coles ; " Killarney" and "1 Cannot Mind my Wheel," Miss Hamilton ; "The End of the World" and. three other comic songs, Mr Gurr; "Close the Shutters, Willie's Dead,' Miss Rose Gimpson ; " Give My Lovc : to all at Home," Miss Fanny Coles ; "Send for Mother, Birdie's F Dying," Miss Tirpin ; " Blue Bells *of Scotland," Miss Jane McLeod ; comic song Mr-Vernal!; "Kitty Wells," Master Cook ; " Still 1 Love Thee," Mrs Vernall ; " Cottage by the Sea," Miss May ; _ "Do They Miss Me at Home," " Miss Gimpson. Duets : " The Cousins, Misses Hamilton and Dunlop j '«Wait

Till the Clouds Noll by," Misses May and McLeod. Recitation, Master M. McLeod; aelections on the piano, Master Robert McLeod. After the last item on the programme had been given, the rev. Chairman rose and said he was both gratified and pleased that the pieces had been received with such teeling and applause. He then called upon Mr Greg", who said he was pleased to see such a good attendance, and that the concert had been such a success. He had great pleasure in proposing a hearty vote of thanks to the performers, specially mentioning those who had come from a distance and who had been of such material help to the evening's entertainment. Mr Binskin had much pleasure in seconding the vote vote, and was gratified at the manner in which their Geraldine and Temuka friends had come forward to assist. The rev. Chairman in returning thanks for the visitors, quite agreed with Mr Binskin. Referring to his duties as Chairman during the evening, Mr Barclay was pleased to say they had been light, and it had been a pleasure to see that the audience had enjoyed the entertainment. A special vote of thanks was passed to Miss Foster for kindly volunteering, almost at the last moment, to preside at the piano, and for the able manner in which she had occupied her position. The singing of the National Anthem brought the entertainment to a close. The room was then cleared for a dance, which was kept up with great spirit for some hours by a large number of the young people.
