THE KING OF SAMOA AND SIR GEORGE GREY.
The following interesting letter has been received by Sir Goorge Grey from the King of Samoa :-" Mulimuri, Samoa, 3rd July, 1885. To His Excellency Sir George Grey. Sir,—l have received your two letters which you sent mo. I read them, together with my Government. They gave us great pleasure, and we now earnestly thauk you for all you have written in those two letters. The sentiments are exceedingly good, and in full accord with our opinions. I wish to make known to Your Excellency in reference to our petition to Hei Majesty the Queen of England, it was not done in ignorance or with any indecision or want of thought or purpose, but on the contrary that the petition was sent with a very clear understanding of its meaning, and it originated in our uuited and very clearly expressed opinioD. We had no other feelings than those embodied. The meaning and sentiments were the expression of the sincere affection of the chief and all men of my Islands, of which God is witness. Another sentiment in your letter is in full accord with our opinion, which is as follows: 'lt is hard for those who are poor to boar patiently difficulties which may nriße.' Another thing we are very desirous of is that some foreigners should be appointed to assist our Government as soon as the decision of the deliberations of the Great Governments are made known. As to those who are rebellious, notwithstanding their provocation to war 1 have borne with it continually in accordance with the desire of the Councils of the Great Governments, for they are not to blame. There are only doing what they have been urged to do by Mr Weber and others. It is thus they have been continually led astray. Yet, notwithstanding «hat, many of the chiefs that rebelled have signed this, and left those men and ioined us. Still I am by no means careless in the matter, and if the rebellious should gather strength I shall make it known, but my opinion is that they are tending towards a collapse. I shall continue to rely on your kindness. From your dear friend, "Malieto, King of Samoa."
