Death or AN Old Maobi. —The death is recorded by the Waipawa Mail of an old native named Apiata Kuikainga, at the end of last month. It is said, says the Mail, that he bad reached the wonderful age of 115 years, and, so far as we can learn, this ii correct. The natives also inform us that the old patriarch claimed to have seen Captain Cook when he sailed past the Bay of Islands j but this we cannot vouch for, as so many natives say they remember seeing the explorer, forgetting that the year 1777 was a lung time ago. Benefactors. — “ When a board of eminent physicans and chemists announced the discovery that by combining some valuable remedies a most wonderful medicine was produced, which would cure such a wide range of diseases that most all other remedies could be dispensed with, many were skeptical, but proof of its merits by actual trial has dispelled all doubt, and to day the discoverers of that great medicine, Dr. Poule’s American Co’s Hop Bitters, are honored and blessed by all as benefactors.” —Read Advt. A Savoury Dish. —The Home correspondent of a northern paper says that a New Zealand colonist has been amusing himself at the expense of the goube-mouches of London by trumping all previous stones of the curiosities of the culinary art, A correspondence has been proceeding in the Press as to the possibility of utilising the insect world for a food supply. He stands up for' grasshoppers, and says that he has often eaten dishfuls of them. He condescends to describe the proper preparation of the savory dish. This is bow ho did it: —“ Our mode of preparation was simple, and, from a subsistence point of view, was very efficacious. Material: One bushel of grasshoppers, half gallon brine (pork preferred). Preliminary : Mix and steep two hours. Preparation : Boil together in camp kettle for twenty minutes ; rinse in lukewarm water, and dish up. Before •ating, divest of heads and tails, etc., a la shrimps. Result: Delicious.” Holloway’s Ointment and Pills.—Coughs.
