FIRE GERALDINE.
The people Geraldine were awakened about two o’clock on Tuesday morning by an alarm/ 0 f g re , and by the bright glar3 the sce^ e was snon discovered—the premises as (lie Young Men’s Club—but it was found that the tire had got such ahold of tl/ ]e building as to defy all efforts to save if ( notwithstanding the large number o| willing hands and a plentiful supply of l water. Attached to the building in tybich the fire commenced was another three rooms, occupied by Mr A. Hosljj DB( gaddler. The fire was not long in* making its way through the partition wall, and Mr Hoskins and his family jg a d some difficulty in making their escape. t They were unable to save anything, I They were the first to discover the fira but it had then got a strong hold of the .adjoining building. Next to Mr Hoskitjg’ B hop, and about six feet from it, a /two-roomed building, which was Bavedjby dint of bard work on the part of th«L e w bo had assembled. Had this taken g re nothing could have saved Mr ,J. B&ughton's tailor’s shop and dwelling hotHje, from which the furniture was reM° v /ed, Mr Stonehouse’s dwelling house, on /the opposite side of the bnildines "townt, had a narrow escape, and was only * av ied through a fortunate change in the wind that was blowing at the time, w Aich enabled those present to keep the en jd of the house well wet with water. The Young Men’s Club lose the whole 9rt their property, consisting of furniture, i}Ookß,and requisitesin connection with their Amusements, etc., the whole being valued feX about £2O. Hoskins loses everything, /with the exception of one or two small f articles which were got out through the i windows. safe, by some of the members. Great praise is due to those who worked so energetically to save the adjoining buildings—more could hardly have been done had a fire brigade been present.
