THE HILTON SCHOOL.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, --In answer to my letter of Thursday last I notice our Chairman has taken up the gauntlet, and stales for his defence that my letter was a misstatement of facts. But I still hold them to be correct, in proof of which I may state that our Chairman at the meeting denied that the advertisement in question appeared in the Waimate Times or any other paper, but later on acknowledged that it did appear in connection with the Waituna school, but not Hilton, How did he know that 1 Eventually the master was asked to attend and he in answer to a question said the advertisement did appear, but destituta of the authority of the
Board of Education or their Inspector. I wonder who pays the piper? 1 doi.'t think the Hilton Committee will. As regards Miss Meredith's application, it was acoepted by the Committee aud the Chairman was instructed to send to the Board for their approval, b it I am sorry to state that in my opinion the expressed wishes of the Committee are seldom conveyed to the Board. As our Chairman failed to give any official report of a mistress having been appointed (further than a private letter of the master, which the Committee conld not accept) it was resolved that she should not enter on her duties until her appointment was Officially made known to the Committee, and I think they were right in doing so. They were supported in their opinion by the Master. 1 don't understand for what reason seven men should be appointed to attend the meetings, when the work is carried on privately by one of the seven and the Board Or somebody else. I often think the Committee causes the school to degenerate—more so than the staff—especially when so much of this kind of work is carried on. —I am, etc., Cornelius Leary. Hilton, August 10,1885.
