John Moriarty, member of the Oamaru Rifle Company, was fined 5s and costs 28s, yesterday, under the Volunteer Regulations, for absenting himself from parade without leave on July 3. The Mornington Tramway Company (Dunedin), have declared a dividend of 6d per share, carrying forward £316. At an early hour on Sunday morning tbe house of Robert Guthrie, Maitland street, Dunedin, was burnt to the ground, Insurance, house and outhouses, £3BO in the Equitable; furniture and effects, £l5O in the same office. It is understood that the Hon. P. A. Buckley, Colonial Secretary, has received a letter from some of the members of the Parnellite party requesting him to allow himself to be nominated for an Irish constituency in, of course, the Home Rule interest. Mr Buckley has not arrived at any decision in the matter, but expects to receive a further communication in a few days. For i»me time past Mr Buckley has been anxious to visit his native country for the purpose of seeing his parents, and it is now likely that he may do so at the end of the present year. Single lawn tennis matches were played at the Wellington Club's court on Friday afternoon, between Christchurch and Wellington representatives. The first game, between Ross (Christchurch), and fell (Wellingtoo), resulted in a victory for the visitor by three sets to love. The second match, between Wilding (Christchurch), and Williams (Wellington), also resulted in the defeat of the local man, this time by three sets to one. The funeral of the late Mr John Hebden, Editor of the Canterbury Times, took place on Friday, and was largely attended by representatives of all branches of work in the various newspaper offices in Christchurch, all of which were closed as a mark of respect to the deceased. A large number of leading citizens were also present. The Agricultural and Pastoral Association passed a vote of condolence to Mrs Hebden. The Southern Cross Petroleum Com* puny report that the 6-inch pipes have been driven to a depth of 324 feet, and that the indication continues favorable. W. Hurcombe offers to box Donovai, the Auckland champion, for £25 a side. The Hunt Club Steeplechases held on Friday at Ashburton were a great success. There were large fields, fovorable wtather, and a good attendance. The following are the results :—Hurdle Race, Bill Allen (Nicholas); Hunt Cup, Victor (Mr Bond) ; Maiden Steeplechase, Rajah (Mr E. Saunders) ; Flat Race, Ormidale (Mr Jeffeiaon); Consolation Steeplechase, Larry (Mr White). A sixteen-roomed building at Karori (Wellington), formerly used as a publichouse, was destroyed by fire on Friday night. Possession of the place had been given up at two o'clock in the afternoon, J. W. Browne, a Wellington surveyor, was taken in oharge for threatening to take''Rough on Rats," which he Lad mixed up in a glass, aod for also threatening to murder his wife and children. The unfortunate man is now in the Hospital, suffering from the effects of a drinking debauch. The glove fight between Raymond and Davis, a Dunedin man, on Saturday night turned out a fiasco. Raymond would not turn out at first, claiming to be sick, and when he did so it was seen he knew little of boxing, but, as he was bigger than Davis, he stood five rounds. No Judges were" present, and each claimed to hav* won., There was an extremely small attendance.
