The lonic has arrived at Rio Janiero, A shock of earthquake was experienced on the West Coast of both islands shortly before 8 o’clock last Sunday night. The Dunedin Chamber of Commerce has passed resolutions affirming the opinion that it is not desirable to put an end to the San Francisco mail service, but that the cost is too high ; and recording its strong objection to the concessions being granted to Messrs Meiggs and Co., in respect to the East and West Coasts and Nelson railway. The Kaikoura left Capetown for New Zealand on July 25. Joseph Moore and Selina Moore have been charged with attempting to poison the parents of the latter in Wellington. The victims of the Christchurch coach accident are progressing more favorably than was at first expected. A smart shock of earthquake was felt in Christchurch shortly before 8 o’clock on Saturday night. A Mrs Hepworth died on Saturday afternoon at Yaldhurst after her confinement. Her husband was riding towards Christchurch for a doctor, and met Dr. Frins soon after starting, with whom he returned, but death had already resulted. The Wellington Evening Press last Saturday night had a chaffing kind of article on the statement made by the Minister of Mines on Friday night. The result is that there has been a row between Mr Larnacb and Mr Wakefield.
