FOOTBALL.
SOUTH CANTERBURY F. TEMUKA, The first match this season between the ; First Fifteens of the South Canterbury and Temnka Football Clubs came off last Saturday in the Temuka Park, and ended in a hard-earned win for Timaru by 1 try to nil. Both teams were very evenly matched, and it seemed by the play during the first spell that the game would result in a draw, slightly in the favor of Temuka, as the ball was kept more frequently near the Timaru quarters, and also as the latter were forced down several times more than the former. The play during the second spell was very even, the hall, almost the whole time, being confined to the centre of the ground, where a series of scrimmages took place. In these Temuka seemed to have an advantage over their opponents, although apparently a lighter team. Haines, Hart and Ogilvie were working well and doing good work for Temuka. The chief feature of the game was the splendid passing of the Timaru backs, especially that of McGuinness and Mclntosh. The ball was carried into the touch near their opponents’ 25 flag, and upon being thrown out it was secured by McGuinness, who passed to Lough, and from thence it was passed to Reid, who rushed in and secured the touch-down. The try at goal was entrusted to King, who failed to increase the score. The game was carried on in a most friendly spirit, and every satisfaction was given by the umpires, Messrs—Hawkes and Gordon Wood. CANTERBURY V. WELLINGTON. The fourth match between Wellington and Canterbury came off at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, on Saturday before 2500 people. A heavy fog in the night drenched the grass, which was scarcely dry, when, just before the match begun, the fog came up from the sea again. This made the ball slippery, and one could not distinguish the players across the ground. The play was excellent, both teams exerting themselves to the utmost. The game resulted in a win for Christchurch by six points to nil. Each province has now won two games,
