MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Board was held in the Road Board Office on Friday, the 17th instant. Present—Messrs R. Mackay, C. G. Tripp, G. J. Dennistoun, and A. Hawdon. The Chairman not being in attendance, Mr C. (J. Tripp was voted to the chair. MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and considered From the Chief Surveyor, Christchurch intimating that when the Board proposes closing any road in their district due notice will require to be given to the Chief Surveyor, with plans of the proposed alteration, in accordance with clause 17 of the Public Works Act, 1882, Amendment Act, 1884. From the Hon. J. B. A. Acland, M.L.0., requesting leave of absence from the meetings of the Board during the session of the General Assembly.—The request was granted. From Mr J. H. Sutter, M.H.R., in reply to the Board’s letter re spread of gorse in riverbeds ; also from Mr Rolleston, M.H.R., in reference to the same. From Messrs McLean, Sons and Co., trade circular in reference to railway material and ironwork. From Messrs W. Stephens and Co., trade circular quoting prices for timber, cement, etc. From Mr F. Newman, requesting the Board fo spread a load of gravel in front of his blacksmith’s shop at Peel Forest.— The Overseer was instructed to put shingle along the sides of the main road through the village at Peel Forest where required. From the Survey Office, Christchurch, returning the Board’s map plotted up to date. From Mr W. Hughes and Mr J. Riddle, of Fairlie Creek, quoting a price for building a travelling hut for the use of surface men. —The Overseer was directed to arrange with Mr Hughes for the building. LOCAL FINANCE AND POWERS BILL. Adraftcopy.of the Local Bodies Finance and Powers Bill for subsiding local bodies was considered at some length, when it was proposed by Mr Mackay, and seconded by Mr Hawdon—“That this Board endorse the telegram sent to the General Government by the Geraldine County Council at its last meeting.” The following amendment vas proposed by Mr Dennistoun, and seconded by the Chairman—“ That in subsidising local bodies by the Government, this Board is in favor of the first schedule of Local Bodies Finance and Powers Bill as it stands in the draft copy.” After a considerable discussion, the amendment was carried by the casting vote of the Chairman. INSTRUCTIONS TO THE OVERSEER. The Overseer was instructed to inspect the r 'ad at the side of the Rajncliff creek, and call for tenders for widening the road if necessary,; to protect the drains leading from the pipe culverts along the Peel Forest main road ; to write to the contractor for No, 31 contract, informing him that unless the y/orfc is begun before next Board day, the contract will be cancelled and his deposit forfeited. INTERVIEW. Mr Blair had an interview with the Board, asking for an extension of time ti~ complete his contract, and one months lime was granted. ACCOUNTS. After passing accounts to the amount of £284 8s 4d, the Board ad journed.
