In anticipation of the passing of Mr Bradshaw’s motion the Directors of the Kaiapoi Woollen Company have decided to work all young persons in their employ days a week and pay them for that time. Previously they got half a holiday on Saturdays, and made up the time by working half-an-hour extra on other days and were paid for six days. A trial was male at Wellington on Monday afternoon with the Hotchkiss machine gun recently fixed in position at Kaiwarra defence works. The trial was a most successful one, and took place in the presence of a number of spectators, including many Legislators. A large number of exhibits haye now arrived at Wellington for the Exhibition from different parts of the colony. In the Art department about 300 pictures have been received, and a start will be made at once to hang them. A dastardly attempt is proved to have been made to scuttle the brig Transport, now loading at Makaroa (Auckland), last Sunday, by which she tilled and settled on the hard. An examination showed three auger holes bored through the copper. An auger aboard has copper adhering 10 its screw. Captain Roberts has had a survey made, and proceeds to Auckland for advice and assistance. The vessel belongs to Captain Ellis, of Newcastle, and is uninsured. At an inquest on the body of Alice Barnaby, who committed suicide by taking “ Rough on Rats,” a verdict was returned that deceased committed suicide whilst in a state of temporary insanity. The jury added a rider to the effect that they wore of opinion that the deceased had been deceived by Igoe, whose conduct towards her had caused the state cf mind which led to the rash act. Igoe is a restaurant keeper, on whose premises the deed was committed. It is understood Mr Ellery, Government Astronomer of Victoria, Mr Russell, Government Astronomer of New South Wales, and other distinguished astronomers, will visit New Zealand in September next for the purpose of observing the great Solar eclipse. %1k Tbo Government steamer Stella, which went out some days ago to look for the shoal on which the lonic is said to have si ruck returned on Monday. At the point indicated a heavy break and rapid shoaling to twelve fathoms was found where the charts recorded deep water. Rough weather compelled postponing further examinations. The largo grain store of the National Mortgage and Agency Coippany in Invercargill has been totally wrecked internally by the concrete blocks on which the columns stood which supported three floors being forced downward by the weight of produce stored. The quantity of grain was 3600 bags, which is said to be much under the capacity of the building. The roof was also strained by the loss of the centre support. The entire interior will require reconstruction. The building was erected about two years ago. The walls have not suffered, the collapse being towards the centre of the building. The accident occurred between Saturday and Monday, there being no one on the premises. At the Police Court, Dunedin, on Monday, Stephen S. Hutchison was committed for trial for having removed from the Oaversham Gas Works five pipes and purifiers within four months of his bankruptcy. A second charge of concealment of other goods will be gone on with next week. The hearing of the charges of conspiring to defraud the Government preferred against Thomas Hough, timekeeper at the Lyttelton Railway Station, and several workmen employed there, commenced at the Supreme Court,Christchurch,on Monday. Hough and a laborer named Robert Dudley were first indicted. It was alleged that all the conspirators were mutually benefited by the false returns of work done sent in by Hough, and for which the laborers drew wages to which they were not entitled. Both were found guilty, but sentence was deferred until similar charges against eight other workmen are disposed of. At a special meeting of the City Council, Auckland, on Tuesday night, to consider the state of the finances of the Corporation, a resolution was passed reducb g all officers’ salaries by 15 per cent. It was also determined to discharge 50 men from the labor gang employed on street works, etc.

The body of the fisherman, James Derritt, who was drowned at Sumner about a month ago, was discovered washed up on the beach at New Brighton on Monday morning, much decomposed. Waring Taylor has been sent to the Hokitika Gaol, where he will serve his sentence. A private cable message announces tha arrival of the Arawaat Plymouth A man named Robert Sellar, formerly waiter at the Empire Hotel, was found dead in his room at Barrett’s Intel Wellington, on Tuesday morning. Tha deceased had evidently committed suicide by eating a whole bottle of “ Rough on Rats." A recent interprovincial chess match between Christchurch and Dunedin has resulted in a win by Christchurch by five games to four, Mr Benbow, of Dunedin, the referee, has adjudged one of the unfinished games to be a win for Christchurch, and the other in favor of Dunedin.
