In anticipation of the passing of Mr Bradshaw’s motion the Directors of the Kaiapoi Woollen Company have decided to work all young persons in their employ days a week and pay them for that time. Previously they got half a holiday on Saturdays, and made up the time by working half-an-hour extra on other days and were paid for six days. A trial was male at Wellington on Monday afternoon with the Hotchkiss machine gun recently fixed in position at Kaiwarra defence works. The trial was a most successful one, and took place in the presence of a number of spectators, including many Legislators. Hough and a laborer named Robert Dudley were first indicted. It was alleged that all the conspirators were mutually benefited by the false returns of work done sent in by Hough, and for which the laborers drew wages to which they were not entitled. Both were found guilty, but sentence was deferred until similar charges against eight other workmen are disposed of. At a special meeting of the City Council, Auckland, on Tuesday night, to consider the state of the finances of the Corporation, a resolution was passed reducb g all officers’ salaries by 15 per cent. It was also determined to discharge 50 men from the labor gang employed on street works, etc.

A recent interprovincial chess match between Christchurch and Dunedin has resulted in a win by Christchurch by five games to four, Mr Benbow, of Dunedin, the referee, has adjudged one of the unfinished games to be a win for Christchurch, and the other in favor of Dunedin.
