Last night the Theatre was full, and no doubt it will he so again this evening. Timaru Poultry, Canary, and Cat Show. —The above show opened in Timaru yesterday and was well attended. The exhibits were numerous and good. Among the prizetakers is Mr Bayley, of Geraldine. The cats were not shown yesterday bub will be to-day. The Timaru Woollen Factory Comrant. —The Directors of this Company have received advices of the shipment of the necessary machinery, and steps will at once be taken to erect the building. Several skilled workmen accompany the machinery. Temuka Bridge.— Owing to ths Temuka Bridge being at present undergoing repairs, traffic was stopped when the Temuka river got toohigh to cross. The contractor, however, with commendable promptitude, came to the rescue by making the bridge passable for light traffic until the ford is again fib to cross.
Ghraldine Township Drains. —The recent wet weather thoroughly tested the capacity of the few drains in the township to carry off the surface water in times of an exceptionally heavy downfall of rain. Several pipe culverts proved to be too small and larger ones are required in their place.
Destruction or Young Fish. —Little damage, so far as we can learn, has been done by the flood. It has, however, proved disastrous to the young fish in our rivers. We are told that numbers of trout were left high and dry on the banks of the rivers. The water went down very quickly, with the result that the fish were caught napping.
The Wkatheb at Geraldine. The weather took a change for the better on Thursday evening, and, with the exception of a few soft showers in the rooming, was fine all day yesterday, So far as can be learned, the damage done by the freshes in creeks and rivers is not serious. The Geraldine and Orari coach was yesterday able to resume its usual route by Peckham’s road, the Waihi having gone down considerably during the night. The late change in the weather will be felt severely by stock, when frosts set in again. Hitherto the winter has been so [dry that an hours’ sunshine in the mornings took away all traces and effects of the night’s frost. With the ground wet and cold the frosts will be keener, and stock will suffer by the change unless they are fortunate enough to haye the friendly shelter of a hay or straw stack. Temttka Volunteer Firs Brigade The yearly meeting of the Fire Brigade was held in Lieut. McSheeby Gentlemun’s rooms on July 7th. Eight members were present, Lieut. McS. Qentlemun in the chair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Two new members were then proposed and seconded, viz., Messrs I). Henry and James Ogilvie. The question of uniforms was then brought up, and after a little discussion it was proposed that a letter be written to the Town Board asking if they would grant the Brigade the sum of £SO towards the purchase of twelve uniforms, the same to be the property of the Board, and in the event of the annual subscription from the United Insurance Company coming to hand the same to be handed over to the Board. It was proposed and carried that meetings be held the first Thursday in each month until further notice. Accounts to the amount of £1 were passed for payment. This being all the business the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
Local Industry.— Finding that pigs are the only commodity that farmers can dispose of to any advantage, Messrs Siegert and Fauvel have, with characteristic enterprise, utilised a portion of their extensive premises for the purpose of bacon curing. The premises are filled up with all the needful appliances, and a commodious smokehouse has been erected. Great care has been exercised in the purchase of pigs, none but those fed on grain being suitable for the purpose, and only thoroughly skilled men are employed. We have used some of the bacon prepared on the premises, and we can, without hesitation, say that it is first class. Although only recently established there are now about ten tons of bacon and hams ready for the marker. It has been specially prepared for the export trade, and we are given to understand that a liberal offer has been made for the lot by a Sydney firm. We trust the venture may meet the seccess it deserves, and form the nucleus of another flourishing industry in our midst. The benefit of such an establishment to farmers would be immense, for the expense of trucking, commission, etc., would then be done away with. Such enterprises as this deserve all the encouragement and support it is possible to give.

Manchester House, Geraldine.—We would draw the attention of our readers to Messrs N. Dunlop and Co.’s advertisement in another column. This enterprising firm are now holding their annual clearing sale of drapery, clothing, groceris, etc., and their extensive and well assorted stock will be sold at prices never before heard of in Geraldine, as a reference to their printed circulars will show. A Wise Deacon.—" Deacon Wilder, I want you to tell me how you kept yourself and family so well the past season, when all the rest of us have been sick so much, and have had the doctors running to us so often.” " Brother Taylor, the answer is very easy. I used Hop Bitters in time, and kept my family well, and saved large doctors bills. Four shillings’ worth of it kept us all well and able to work all the time, and I will warrant it hae cost you and most of the neighbors £lO to £IOO apiece to keep sick the same time. 1 fancy you’ll take my medicine hereafter.” —See Advt.
