A letter was r<md from Mr F. LeOren Manager of the N"W Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company pointing out the high rates of Insurance charged by the New Zealand Marine Insurance Association at Timaru compared with the rates at other ports. He said if the rate could not be brought down, he feared that much of the produce sent per direct “hip would he seat coastwise.—Mr Hayes moved, Mr El worthy seconded, and it was carried—“ That the letter be referred to the Standing Committee to deal with.” The mover said the Committee could take time and pains over the matter, and try to disable the Insurance Association of the absurd idea of the nonsafety of the port of Timaru, so that the port may no longer bo so heavily handicapped. •

The Secretary presented a statement of the receipts and expenditure for the six months ended June 30th, 1885, which, compared with the six mouths of 1884, showed that the revenue had increased this half year by £BOO. The Committee: thought Mr C. W, Turner’s complaints had been fully ■answered by the Secretary; and that Captain Millea’ complaint re unnecessary detention of the barque Kassa was not upheld. Be Mr Bruce’s complaint re haulage charged on goods which had been taken by request to the Landing Service for shipment and which afterwards bad to be shipped at the wharf, it was suggested that a letter be written to Mr Sutler to be laid before the Minister for Public Works, explaining the the circumstances, and asking that haulage, might not be charged in similar cases, as it is not so charged at other ports. The Harbor Masler reported the arrival of 23 vessels ■ duting the month. The gross earnings of the Landing Service, were £2OO Is, and the net, £67 15s 4d. At the request of Mr Acton, the St anding Committee agreed to meet on Tuesday next, and consult with Mr Goodall on the dredging question.

The Clerk of the Works, and Consulting Engineer’s reports were read. The latter reported that as far .as he was able to judge nothing had been done amiss during his absence. After Mr Goodall had explained his plan for decking the Moody wharf, it was decided to call for tenders for tire work, tenders to be in by next meeting.

Copies of the Empowering Bill now before the House of Representatives were read; and some suggestions and additions made by the solicitor were ordered to be forwarded to Wellington. Af er passing accounts amounting to £2213 16s 8(1, the Board adjourned.
